Food waste is something that I really struggle with. So, as part of my values as a sustainable wedding planner, I always advise my couples in the best way possible how to get the most out of their wedding cake.

So, here are my top tips to avoid your wedding cake going to waste:

1) Serve your wedding cake as a dessert.
2) Drop the sweet station, donuts wall or ice cream van. Think carefully and realistically about how much sweet stuff your guests can really eat. Especially if you’ll be serving a three-course meal as well!
3) Freeze your cake - save some tiers to take home and freeze.
4) Cutting cake: some cake makers can make a smaller display cake, sometimes with fake tiers and all, and they will bake a cutting cake (same as the display cake but easier to cut.)
5) Save the cake for the day after if you are hosting a brunch or lunch.
6) (MY FAVOURITE!) Give your cake away as a wedding favour!

And Don't forget to give your on the day coordinator / caterer / venue instructions on what you want to do with the cake. Provide containers if you are taking some tiers back home to freeze and make sure you create a special moment in your time plan to cut the cake (yes, write it down in your running order so all suppliers know it is happening!)

A conscious consumer wedding registry is a great way to ensure that your wedding gifts are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. Here are some ideas for a conscious consumer wedding registry:
1. Reusable bags and containers.
2. Sustainable bedding and towels: Look for bedding and towels made from organic cotton, bamboo, h**p or linen. 3. Eco-friendly kitchen appliances.
4. Sustainable furniture.
5. Charitable donations

Remember to communicate your values as a conscious consumer with your guests, and make sure they understand and support your choices. Good luck with your registry and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Now, more than ever, with the right tools and contacts it is easier to find a venue that supports your environmental or social causes. From museums, organisations supporting heritage and tradition, village halls, community organisations, hotels with strong eco-credentials or country houses, the choice is out there. A lot of these venues have started to source their food from local and organic producers too!

and conflict free wedding rings are becoming increasingly popular among socially and environmentally conscious couples. One of the most well-known ethical standards when it comes to diamonds is the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), which ensures that diamonds are sourced and traded without funding conflict or human rights abuses. Additionally, organizations such as the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) and Fairtrade Gold can help guide couples to jewelers who prioritize ethical and sustainable sourcing practices. Consider looking for wedding bands made from recycled metals, lab-grown diamonds or other alternative gemstones. By doing your research and choosing a jeweler who prioritizes ethical and conflict-free practices, you can ensure that your symbol of love is also a symbol of social and environmental responsibility

Yes! Quality over quantity is definitely important when it comes to weddings. Instead of focusing on having a huge number of guests or trying to pack in as many activities as possible, it's better to prioritize the quality of the experience for everyone involved. This might mean keeping the guest list smaller so that you can focus on making each individual feel special and cared for, or it might mean choosing a few key elements (like a beautiful venue, delicious food, or meaningful decor) to really invest in, rather than trying to cram in too much. By prioritizing quality over quantity, you'll be able to create a more memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

My work ethic reflects my can-do-attitude and passions for party planning and the planet. From music to types of celebration, suppliers, special diets and religious requests, I handle everything in a calm, considerate and respectful way.

Sustainable wedding favours are a great way to help reduce the environmental impact of your wedding while also providing guests with a memorable and meaningful gift.

Here are some ideas:

1. Seed packets: Give guests packets of wildflower, herb or vegetable seeds so they can plant them and watch them grow.

Trying just one thing from this list can make a big impact:

1. Use recycled paper, seeded paper or e-vites.

2. Choose reusable materials like glass, china, steel, or bamboo instead of disposable plastic or paper plates and cups.

3. Use potted plants or donate flowers to local nursing homes or hospitals instead of throwing them away.

4. Use decor that can be reused or repurposed instead of buying new items.

5. Use local and organic food to support small businesses and reduce carbon footprints.

6. Provide water dispensers or pitchers instead of individual plastic water bottles.

7. Encourage carpooling or public transportation.

You can have a beautiful and eco-friendly wedding celebration that minimizes waste and helps protect the environment.

As a wedding guests, have you every finished all your 3 course meals?

Build a locally sourced menu.
Choose a caterer that has sustainability at heart and that will work with you creating a menu that’s locally sourced (extra points if the produce is in-season). You’ll support your local farmers, and your food will taste better too.

If you want to go the extra mile, try serving an all vegetarian menu to cut back on the carbon emissions that come from meat (even just cutting red meat from the menu makes a huge difference!)

17/02/2023

Approximately 180 - 300 kg of waste is produced on average per wedding according to reports from the United Nations Environmental Programme and the EPA. This waste includes all materials used for decorations, gifts, food, and more that are thrown away after the event.

The most common sources of wedding waste are food, disposable cutlery and crockery, plastic, bottles, stationery and decorations. The amount of waste created at a wedding will depend on the size of the party and the type of food served. Since weddings typically involve more elaborate decorations, extravagant meals, and more guests than other events, they usually create more waste.

Here are some tips on how to make your wedding more sustainable:
1) Venue: choose a venue that has sustainability practices at heart and in practice. These usually include reusable table setting and decor, use of renewable energy, environmental, social and ethical business practices.
2) Favours: choose something that can be used, a bespoke tea towel, hand painted bees wax candles, potted plants that can be use as decor, etc.
3) Food& Flower donation: some florist and caterers work alongside charities that will take leftover food and flowers. These include hospices, orphanages, rehabilitation centres and care homes.
4) Digital based stationary: with so many platforms now offering beautify designed digital stationary, there really is no need to print!

Your sustainable wedding does not have to look rustic!
Sustainable weddings are not a style, they are a choice.
When you choose to have a sustainable wedding you are not restricted to specific styles like boho, eco, rustic, wild, outdoor, etc.
Planning a sustainable wedding allows you to enjoy your wedding day by making the right choices. Choosing ethical suppliers, making meaningful choices that work for you, are all part of the process of reducing your carbon footprint, ensuring you are part of the solution to the climate and social crisis, not part of the problem.

The style of your wedding should be defined by you.
Your wedding should be uniquely yours.
My main mission when I set up SWW was to help engaged couples to make their dream wedding come true without costing the Earth!
