Phoenician Blinds is the brainchild of Franco-American pianist Tom Sochas, who was born and raised in Paris and Nairobi, and moved to London in 2011. Here he began to compose for a quartet, and Phoenician Blinds was the result. Since then they have released three critically acclaimed albums, as well as touring in the UK and Europe, including Ronnie Scott’s, Birdland in Hamburg, Sunset Sunside in Paris, Philly Joe’s in Tallinn, Sala Clamores in Madrid, The Jazz Bar in Edinburgh and Milano Jazz Club in Barcelona.
Tom’s love of lyrical and melodic music, hard hitting post-bop and western classical music has led him to developing a unique sound, itself materialising into his first solo EP, ‘You could hear the bird sing’. Following its success he released his debut trio album The Sorcerer on Khumbu Records on in April 2022.
He also composes for film and theatre. Meanwhile the critics have raved about The Sorcerer.

YETII ftg. Jake McMurchie - Jazz Stage - 1 PM
‘Yetii‘ is a Bristol-based acoustic jazz trio. The group creates a sound world of complex yet consonant harmony supporting simple, singable melodies. Solos morph into intense group improvisations that focus on interlocking, minimalist fragments: a shared single voice that ebbs and flows between and within the band’s original compositions.
Line Up:
ALEX VEITCH: Piano
ASHLEY JOHN LONG: Double Bass
ALEX GOODYEAR: Drums
Special Guest: JAKE McMURCHIE: Tenor Saxophone
Whilst most of the audience wouldn’t have previously identified as jazz fans what they do pick up on is the spirit of interplay at work between the musicians in front of them.
Throwaway washy quintuplet outros, B sections like a Disney movie chorus: this is serious jazz craft in an accessible guise facilitated by detailed compositions that give space for the musicians to be spontaneous and change direction.

“all played with great beauty and sensitivity… A standing ovation greeted the end of their set” — Jazzwise
“a performance that both enthralled and delighted the audience” — ★★★★★ The Jazz Mann (live review)
“a trio of fluent and wildly inventive improvisers”
— London Jazz News
“the crisp recording beautifully separates the richly sonorous bass and scintillating drums from Veitch’s carefully crafted melodic lines”— Jazz Views

THE JAZZ DEFENDERS - Jazz Stage - 6PM
Led by one of the UK's most formidable jazz pianists, George Cooper, The Jazz Defenders are a group born from a deep love of Blue Note jazz, drawing on a wealth of inspiration to craft their own raw and vibrant compositions.
Jake McMurchie: Tenor sax
Nick Malcolm: Trumpet
Ian Matthews: Drums
Will Harris: Bass
George Cooper: Piano/keyboards
Having played several shows at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club as well as many other prestigious venues in the UK and Europe, they continue to electrify audiences with their energy and virtuosity.
As The Jazz Defenders carry on distinctly ‘defending’ the legacy of some of the classic hard bop greats such as Horace Silver, Lee Morgan and Art Blakey, they begin to evolve their modern soul jazz slant to combine solid grooves and catchy horn lines with a collaborative and comprehensive sound, fusing soul, jazz, hip hop, soundtrack and groove into a masterful union that leaves audiences mesmerised.
The result is an enthrallingly unique sound that is as danceable as it is listenable.
The group's brainchild, pianist and composer George Cooper, has lent his ample skill to a range of artists as varied as Hans Zimmer, Nigel Kennedy, U2, Omar, Slum Village, MF Doom, The Brand New Heavies, Lisa Stansfield, Wet Wet Wet, The Haggis Horns, Abstract Orchestra and Lack of Afro.

High Tide 2024 will be on Sunday 28 July.
Once again we will be creating an amazing day of high quality, original and diverse music and spoken word.
And we need your help as much as ever! High Tide can only happen with the community’s support. All of the money we raise goes towards paying the artists and staging costs. With inflation impacting on costs, raising the funds we need to make it all work this year, will be a major challenge.
Please help us to do it!! Link in bio

We are kicking off 2024 with a great act at Off the Rails with tenorist Julain Costello's new project: VERTIGO
Booking https://www.wegottickets.com/event/603290 or
Tenor saxophone and cello feature in this new quartet led by saxophonist Julian Costello. Expect melodic, cinematic original compositions, along with interpretations of Jimi Hendrix, Sarah Vaughan and some jazz standards. The set is also infused by World Music-inspired riffs and grooves with the soprano sax and oud.
Julian has toured Europe and the UK several times, and has released a number of highly-praised albums, recorded in studios from Italy to Norway. The newest is due for release later in 2024.
London Jazz News described his work as "a saxophonist’s original chamber jazz writing which meanders between wistfulness, adventure and perky mischief.... Costello imbues his instrumental pieces with emotion, space and lyricism".
Reviewing a live gig, another writer added: "Musically this was one of the most satisfying performances in the history of the Club, Costello and his colleagues really were a class act, with the leader impressing both as an instrumentalist and a composer."
Natalie Rozario: cello and vocals
Stefanos Tsourelis: oud and guitar
Sophie Alloway: drums
Julian Costello: Saxes
