Dino Baptiste 🎹🎙️| Monday 16th September 2024 - 8:00 PM
Dino Baptiste has been an outstanding pianist working with an array of local and internationally recognised artists for over two decades. Best known here at the Club as the pianist with the iconic Blues singer Dana Gillespie he first started performing in the mid 70's, influenced by the likes of Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Louis Prima. In the early 90's he was hired by Dana to accompany her for a show, which turned out to be a musical match made in heaven and more than 20 years later he remains an integral part of her band. A busy and successful musician Dino also includes work with the likes of Donald Fagen, Lulu, Leo Sayer, Jeff Beck and Paul Jones, plus numerous gigs with his own band at Clubs and Blues festivals around the UK and Europe. His debut CD “Two Timing Lover” was received with considerable acclaim and it is music from this album plus as Dino puts it "an exclusive selection of old hits from my idols Ray Charles and Nat King Cole" that he will be performing tonight. Anyone who has seen Dino's dynamic performances with Dana here at the Club will know just how impressive his Blues and Boogie Woogie playing really is.

Led by old friend of the Club bassist 🎸Michael Bailey along with singer 🎙️Ama Lia the band effortlessly deliver a compelling array of musical styles, from Groove & Latin to Blues & Soul. Collectively the band include work with the likes of Bob Marley, Johnny Nash, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend, Chaka Khan, Lionel Richie & Beyonce and Ama Lia describes them as “a unique family of musicians with an immense wealth of experience, music and stories”.

His brand of jazz-tinged contemporary soul and blues is really stunning, with his fabulous, smoky, velvety growl of a voice delivering original material and some covers in his inimitable style. With 11 CDs to his name, including his latest “Meteorite”, Tony has established himself as one of the most original and powerful performers on the scene today, with a fan base that reaches around the world. Not surprisingly his regular band features some of the finest groove musicians around and tonight is no exception. Saxophonist 🎷 Derek Nash is perhaps best known as one of the featured saxophonists with the Jools Holland Band, leader of the enormously successful “Sax Appeal” and co-leader of the funk/groove outfit “Protect the Beat”. An experienced musician of many years standing his muscular, fluent, modern jazz playing has been recognised with numerous awards, including “Best Jazz Ensemble” and “Best Jazz CD” as well as being voted one of the top 5 saxophonists in the country. Derek’s latest recording with his Acoustic Quartet, “You’ve Got to Dig it to Dig it, you Dig?” is garnering avid, five-star reviews, as well as airplay on Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 programme. Derek also co-leads, along with singer Noel McCalla, the tremendously successful celebration of the music of Stevie Wonder, 'Some Kinda' Wonderful'. And if all that wasn’t enough he is also highly regarded as a recording engineer, producer and arranger, with a client list that includes Annie Lennox, Alison Moyet, Lulu, Kylie Minogue, David Sanborn and Martha Reeves.

Clark Tracey🥁 is an excellent, highly experienced, award-winning drummer, bandleader, composer and arranger. Originally featured with the band of his late, great, father Stan, Clark has gone on to establish himself in his own right as one of the country’s leading modern jazz drummers. He has recorded over 90 albums (9 as a leader) and performed in over 50 countries. Awarded the “Best Drums” title five times in the British Jazz Awards and Ronnie Scott’s Award for “Best Drums” in 2007, Clark received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music and the promotion of jazz. As a bandleader he can boast some of the finest musicians in the UK have passed through his ranks, including the likes of Nigel Hitchcock, Dave O’Higgins, Mark Nightingale, Mornington Lockett and Zoe Rahman. The quintet gig tonight features a truly impressive group of top class British jazz players, the “Jazz Champions”: saxophonists 🎷Art Themen & Simon Allen , pianist 🎹Dave Newton & bassist 🎸 Andrew Cleyndert.

A brilliant Groove and R&B singer/pianist (see below for evening band details) we thought it would be fun to start the day off showcasing Tony O'Malley’s lesser known, but equally impressive, jazz standards singing. Appearing as a duo this afternoon Tony will be performing songs from his two “Standards” albums (“My Foolish Heart” and “Mansarde Sessions”) including the likes of Autumn Leaves, Stardust, Georgia and Smile plus some of his “swing” originals. Originally from Wales, pianist Joe Webb is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with on the UK jazz scene. Now resident in London, he’s worked with Hailey Tuck, Rob Luft, Fraser and the Alibis and more. But it is as a member of the Kansas Smitty’s House Band, the hip, mainstream jazz outfit dubbed London’s ‘new swing princes’ that his profile has ascended to even greater heights (including appearing with fellow Smitty’s on Jamie Cullum’s recent Christmas album).

Her latest album ’The Crossing’, which she is launching this evening, is a return to her more British jazz and soul classic sound, but still with a touch of Latin flair. She has put together an outstanding, 10-piece band to bring her arrangements to the Club, featuring Ross Stanley-piano, Giorgio Serci-guitar, Andy Hamill-bass & Martyn Kaine-drums. Tonight sees the first live performance of this remarkable duo, featuring expat US singer/pianist Charlie Wood and one of the UK’s finest jazz pianists Robin Aspland.
For over fifteen years Charlie performed nightly on Beale Street, Memphis, picking up numerous awards and honours along the way. Since moving to the UK notable performances have included appearances at the London Jazz Festival's "Jazz Voice", BBC Radio 2's "Friday Night Is Music Night" and the "Jools Holland Show". Robin Aspland is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz pianists of his generation whose fluent and creative playing has been heard with the likes of George Coleman, Ronnie Scott and Van Morrison.
Tonight these two master musicians bring this remarkable duo to the Club, to perform, as they describe it: “A programme that includes jazz standards, show tunes, classics from the Great American Songbook, popular songs and the odd original composition, all with an emphasis on spontaneity and improvisation. Awarded the "Best Drums" title five times in the British Jazz Awards and Ronnie Scott's Award for “Best Drums” in 2007, Clark received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music and the promotion of jazz. As a bandleader he can boast some of the finest musicians in the UK have passed through his ranks, including the likes of Nigel Hitchcock, Dave O'Higgins, Mark Nightingale, Mornington Lockett and Zoe Rahman. The quintet gig tonight features a truly impressive group of top class British jazz players, the "Jazz Champions": saxophonists 🎷Art Themen & Simon Allen, pianist 🎹Dave Newton & bassist 🎸 Andrew Cleyndert.

The 606 Club was founded in 1976 to present the best British-based jazz, soul, blues, R&B & smooth jazz live music. Called "London's best music venue" by Jamie Callum, the 606 is located just a few minutes from King's Road in Chelsea and offers fine modern British food along with a carefully chosen wine list.
