from the inside out. Drink plenty of water and use a rich, nourishing moisturiser to create a protective barrier against the winter elements.

🍇 Antioxidant Boost:
Give your skin an antioxidant boost to protect against environmental stressors. Incorporate fruits
rich in antioxidants, like berries and citrus, into your diet. Topical antioxidants, vitamin C & resveratrol in your skincare routine can further enhance protection.

🧴 Gentle Cleansing Routine:
Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of essential oils . Limit hot showers, as hot water can contribute to dryness. After cleansing, pat your skin dry instead of rubbing.

🌞 Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable:
Even in winter, UV rays can damage your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least
SPF 50, especially on exposed areas. This is a crucial step for maintaining healthy skin year- round.

🧣 Protect Your Lips:
Don't forget about your lips! Cold winds can lead to chapped lips. Keep them soft and supple with a nourishing lip balm. Look for ingredients like shea butter and vitamin E for added hydration.

🧿Protect your eyes:

Did you know poor sleep at night and snoring can be due to sleep disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

This affects over 50% of the population over middle age and many are undiagnosed.

Why is this important?
There is a strong risk of developing:
hypertension
diabetes
heart disease
strokes
dementia
blindness
floppy eyelids
dry eyes

The latest NICE Guideline on OSA for adults stipulated that one of the alternative to CPAP therapy is Mandibular Advancement Therapy (MAD) delivered by trained dentists. This may be better tolerated and significantly reduce risk of developing disease.

An eye assessment and treatment of dry eyes and floppy loose eyelids can be life saving.

With over 750 registrants from over 30 countries, I am honoured to be Chairing the Aesthetic Session of the 41st Annual ESOPRS Meeting in Naples.

The concept of stimulation-induced analgesia originates from the Gate Control Theory of Pain that was first reported in 1965 by Melzack and Wall.

This theory states that when A-β fibers (large fibers) are stimulated by non-noxious stimuli (eg vibration or cold), they prevent pain signals transmitted by A-δ or C fibers (small fibers) from reaching the central nervous system. As a result, the non-noxious stimulus (vibration) suppresses pain.

Safety in Beauty: Eyes & Skin Introducing the story tellers:

I am Professor Jonathan Roos a Harvard & Cambridge (double first) trained eyelid plastic & surgeon and cosmetic doctor, with a passion for safety in beauty.

I am an external professor at the institute of Mario Negri in Milan - Italy's leading research organisation where I lecture to PhD students on aspects of fairness in medicine. .

I teach on avoiding periocular complications for aesthetic, oculoplastic, ophthalmic & optometric conferences and have published award winning literature. I am a reviewer for academic journals & have co-authored publications on safety in beauty.

Through collaboration with industry leaders in skincare we bring the safest evidence based skincare to our patients.

Together, Rachna Murthy and I of have written consensus guidance on filler safety, contributed 4 book chapters on cosmetic surgery & complications in European & US oculoplastic & optometry texts already in 2023.

We are also honoured to Co-author a global narrative review on cosmetic ingredients that can harm the eye.

We want to bring our findings that highlight eye-safe healthy ageing options to the cosmetic & eye-care industry; through our friends in industry journals & consumer press, through medical conferences (RCOphth, CCR, IMCAS, 100Optical, 100Ophthalmology) our aim is to educate professionals & empower consumers to make informed choices.
