The state you were born to bring, lays in wait. The small still voice within is waiting to welcome you home. We may have told ourselves that we are so complex, that the solutions to finding inner peace are also equally or more complex. This is an illusion which keeps us in search constantly seeking and usually outside of ourselves. The solution is simple yet requires courage, which may not hold a strong presence in our lives when we are functioning in stressful states. Mindfulness works by reducing attachment, the motivation of either desire or fear underlying each thought. Thoughts can only appear in the present moment, however they carry attachment so deeply connected to the past, our identification with them goes unnoticed. The whole process is better understood by being experienced in the practice of meditation, where the whole scene can play out. When the breath, heart and thought rate come into balance, we can intuitively let go of destructive emotions and states that bind us to the past.

We hear this all the time and Iโ€™ve been guilty of preaching the importance of self-love. However, the mechanics of how this is practiced is difficult to describe in words so itโ€™s natural we get lost and forget. Other descriptions such as โ€œself-compassion or self-acceptanceโ€ can offer a clearer explanation but this is more about โ€œclear seeingโ€ than โ€œdoing moreโ€ - in other words - the seeing is the doing. Self-acceptance means starting right where you are. Accepting - even that you may find yourself or predicament โ€œunacceptable or unbearableโ€ and allowing what you can bare to be seen and acknowledged, one piece at a time if thatโ€™s what it takes. Often we withdraw because we fear if we turn to face whatโ€™s unbearable we will be overwhelmed. Acknowledging and appreciating ourselves with our predicaments as it allows the clear seeing. A great man once said, โ€œif you were to escape from prison, the first thing you must acknowledge is that you are in prison, for those who deny this reality - no escape is possibleโ€. Is this not like our minds? How often do we overlook whatโ€™s happening to find the escape route immediately. Clear seeing requires an objective attitude of being non-judgmental - remember the seeing is the doing. Full recognition is like switching on the floodlights when weโ€™ve been using a match to find our way around a dark forest. This is a powerful means to open the gateway to hearing what is needed, rather than having to think our way through the muddy waters.

Asking WHY could be one of the biggest causes of anxiety. This question goes largely unnoticed but spontaneously occurs during stressful periods when we are usually in states of autopilot or trance. The brain's hunger for meaning asks โ€œwhyโ€ at every stage of suffering, mental surface level, emotional and spiritual. Asking โ€œwhyโ€ to god or our highest self to understand our suffering has gone on for millennia. Asking why we experience anxiety or fluctuations in mood can be an instinctive and impulsive reaction and feels very justified. This pathway leads us away from acceptance and forgiving and gets us tangled up with thinking about thinking, creating more destructive patterns. โ€œWhyโ€ undermines acceptance. Try asking just two different questions; WHAT is the emotion I am feeling right now? WHAT does this emotion need? Ask this when you are meditating, contemplating, praying or just reflecting in your journal. Asking โ€œwhatโ€ identifies the emotion in need directly which is often covered by the involvement with the story. Secondly, asking what does this emotion need, opens the gateway to being present with ourselves by attending to our needs. The emotions often just simply need to be seen, acknowledged, loved or cared - but donโ€™t take my word for it, try this for yourself. โค๏ธ

These come along moment after moment, most of which pass our attention until something passes along which grabs the attention. In trance attention merges with thinking and engages in a harmful process of judging, either the experience, other person or the self. This occurs because of one distinct factor; identification with thoughts and feeling as โ€œIโ€ โ€œmineโ€ or โ€œmyselfโ€. In states of trance (non-mindfulness) identification takes places instantly with thinking, so the thought now becomes โ€œmy thoughtโ€ and judging takes over โ€œI donโ€™t like thisโ€ โ€œthis shouldnโ€™t be happening to meโ€ โ€œeveryone else seems fine but Iโ€™m failingโ€. Weโ€™ve all been here even if a sense of those beliefs colours of experience. Our real self is found behind experience, subject and object and the world of definitions and boundaries/separateness. Simply be conscious of awareness and watch the mind judging, are this process over and over again untilโ€ฆ.there is space between you and your reacting mind. Awareness and improving meta-cognition is linked to significant health benefits, mainly anxiety, poor self esteem, confidence and can keep depressive episodes away.
