The vihta, or bath broom, is traditionally used more in western Finland, and the vasta is used in eastern Finland. This bundle of herbs or twigs is used as a sort of whip to circulate the hot air throughout the sauna and to increase the sauna's heat by smacking the broom against the body. Methods for making these twig brooms are passed down through generations, and people can develop a deep emotional connection to them.
According to folklore, here are the uses for each type of plant used to make Finnish bath brooms:
Birch: The king of sauna whisks, believed to symbolize virginity

How much is too much, and when is it not safe?
THE 9 RULES OF SAUNA SAFETY
1️⃣ Don’t stay in too long
15 to 20 minutes at a time is generally considered the max. If you are sensitive to heat, start off with a short stay.
2️⃣Cool down
There is a long Finnish tradition of going straight from the sauna into the snow but a gradual cool down is easier. For a less extreme way to cool your body down, take a cold or cool shower.
3️⃣Rest
Relax for at least ten minutes afterward. Let your body recuperate before doing the hot, cold, relaxation circuit again. Personally, my body can’t tolerate doing the sauna more than twice, and the second time is usually shorter.
4️⃣Rehydrate
Drink plenty of water before and after. You may want to eat something salty afterward if you’ve sweat a lot.
5️⃣Consider the buddy system
Going into the sauna with a friend or family member isn’t a bad idea so that if problems do occur, someone has your back.
6️⃣Consider your health
The heat of the sauna makes the heart work harder. Reasons to avoid the sauna include heart problems, pregnancy, high or low blood pressure, etc. If you have any concerns, check with your doctor first.
7️⃣Never drink alcohol in the sauna
Also, don’t go in right after a large meal or strenuous exercise.
8️⃣Know that saunas can burn
Too much time in the sauna at a too high temperature can lead to blistering. If your skin starts to sting, get out.
9️⃣Monitor your body
If you start to feel dizzy, nauseous or have a headache, leave immediately. There is no point in taxing the body to extreme - especially not in the name of wellness. Moderation is key.
Saunas can be a great relaxing pleasure, so follow these safe sauna rules, check with your doctor if you have any questions and use common sense to get the most of your experience.
Remember… rest is not laziness. Rest is another part of your work, work on restoring your mind, strength and energy.

How Often Should You Use a Sauna?
Saunas offer amazing health benefits. They are a way of life for many people. People use saunas after they’ve worked out. They also use it to unwind themselves after a tiring day. They are safe to be used daily and therefore, are quite popular.
But, how often should you use a sauna to have a positive impact on your body?
You will feel relaxed after just one session of the sauna. It is pleasant and soothing. However, if you want a positive impact on your body, then you must have regular sauna sessions. Just like any other routine, it takes time for the sauna to give you the results you want. Therefore, don’t think that just going for a couple of sauna sessions will help you achieve what you desire. Give it time and you will see the results.
In some time, you will start seeing results on your cardiovascular system, metabolism, and immune system. To achieve these benefits, you must visit the sauna at least once a week.
If you want to attain maximum benefits of a sauna without causing any damage to your health, then aim for 1-3 sessions a week. Don’t go overboard! Spending too much time in the sauna may weaken your body.
SOME TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF SAUNA SESSIONS
🔥Tip1
Make sure you drink a lot of water.
Sweating helps our bodies eliminate heavy metals, PCB’s, BPA and other toxins. However, it also depletes our bodies of water and minerals, so we need to replenish both. One way to replenish electrolytes have a green smoothies especially with a kale that is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium.
Drink a lot of fluids, stick to the water and remember saunas and alcohol should never mix.
🔥Tip2
Take it slow.
Most sources recommend starting with 10-15 minute session, increasing the time spend as you feel comfortable. The suggested session time for sauna is between 20-45 minutes, but always listen to your body.
🔥Tip3
Wear cotton.
Breathable, washable natural fibers like cotton are ideal for sauna bathing. For each guest we always provide one bath towel after you shower, one small cotton towel to put on a bench to keep the sauna clean and cotton bathrobe for guest to wear after you finish your session. After you finish your sessions please toss everything in a laundry hamper.
🔥Tip 4
Don’t eat a large meal before a session.
Saunas increase the flow of nutrients( glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, and oxygen) via the circulatory system. While it may seem like a perfect time to add in some more nutrients with a healthy meal, the reality is that the process gets put in the back burner while the circulatory system focuses on nutrients to the muscles and skin. So best is not to eat a large meal right before stepping into a sauna. Have a snack and eat when your session is over.

Listen to your body.
If you feel lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous, queasy or off in any way, end your session.

Rinse and repeat
Take a warm( not hot) or cold shower( really recommended) after each session to rinse away any toxins eliminated via sweat. By now you should be feeling amazing and looking forward to your next session.

12 Sauna Health Benefits Backed by Research

Heat treatment has been used to help heal the body for thousands of years.
Let’s take a look at some of the the amazing health benefits offered to those who use sauna regularly.
1. Detoxification
Harmful toxic elements like manmade chemicals and heavy metals get accumulated in our fat cells and usually get eliminated by burning of fat and then excreted in sweat. Sauna is the most effective method to sweat out toxins since the human body possesses the ability to get rid of toxins in the sweat. The body heats up raising the core body temperature by two-to-three degrees and increases the blood circulation to even the smallest blood vessels.
