Impact of acupuncture and integrative therapies on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: A multicentered, randomized controlled trial - PubMed 03/05/2023

Acupuncture reduces chemo neuropathy symptoms
Acupuncture alone or delivered alongside other complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) modalities can help reduce neuropathy-related symptoms during chemotherapy treatment of cancer. Israeli researchers carried out a pragmatic trial in a group of 168 participants with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Patients were treated with their preference of either acupuncture and CIM therapies (intervention group) or standard care alone (controls) for six weeks. Patients in the intervention arm were randomised to twice-weekly acupuncture-only (group A) or acupuncture with additional manual-movement or mind-body CIM therapies (group B). Baseline-to-six-week assessment scores improved significantly in the intervention arm versus controls for scores relating to overall chemotherapy-related quality of life, and sub-domains of emotional well-being, hand numbness/tingling and discomfort, and physical functioning. Intervention groups A and B both showed significant improvements in physical well-being, foot discomfort and pain scores.

Angelica essential oil is a popular herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), also known as D**g Quai or Chinese Angelica. It is commonly used in TCM to help regulate women's menstrual cycles, improve blood circulation, and alleviate menstrual pain. Here are some of the effects of angelica essential oil from a TCM perspective:

1. Regulates menstruation: Angelica essential oil is known to have a warming effect on the body, which can help regulate menstruation and alleviate menstrual pain. It is believed to promote blood circulation in the pelvic area, helping to regulate the menstrual cycle.

2. Promotes blood circulation: Angelica essential oil is also used in TCM to promote blood circulation throughout the body. It is believed to have a warming effect on the body, which can help dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow.

3. Relieves pain: Angelica essential oil is believed to have analgesic properties, which can help relieve pain. It is often used to alleviate menstrual pain, headaches, and joint pain.

4. Strengthens the immune system: Angelica essential oil is believed to have immune-boosting properties, which can help strengthen the body's natural defenses against illness and disease.

5. Supports digestion: Angelica essential oil is also used in TCM to support digestion. It is believed to have a soothing effect on the stomach and intestines, helping to relieve digestive discomfort and promote healthy digestion.

It is important to note that while angelica essential oil has been used for centuries in TCM, scientific research on its effects is still limited. As with any herbal remedy, it is important to consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using angelica essential oil, especially if you are pregnant or have any medical conditions.

Essential oils can be a great addition to your wellness routine when used safely and appropriately. Here are some tips for using essential oils safely:

1. Always dilute: Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diluted before use. Dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil before applying them to your skin. A good rule of thumb is to use a 2% dilution, which means adding 12 drops of essential oil to 30ml of carrier oil.

2. Test for sensitivity: Before using an essential oil topically, do a patch test on a small area of skin to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction or sensitivity to the oil. Place a drop of diluted oil on your inner arm and wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction.

3. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes: Essential oils should never be applied directly to your eyes or mucous membranes, such as your nose or mouth.

4. Use caution during pregnancy and with children: Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy or when used with children. Check with a healthcare professional or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils during pregnancy or on children.

5. Choose quality oils: Look for essential oils that are pure, therapeutic grade, and have been properly stored. Avoid oils that have been adulterated or contain synthetic fragrances.

6. Use in moderation: Essential oils should be used in moderation. Start with a small amount and use only as needed.

7. Use a diffuser: A diffuser is a great way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils without applying them directly to your skin. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.

8. Store properly: Essential oils should be stored in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep them out of reach of children and pets.

By following these guidelines, you can safely and effectively use essential oils to support your overall health and wellbeing.

In traditional Chinese medicine, sweetcorn (also known as corn or maize) is believed to have a number of health benefits.
Here are some of the ways sweetcorn is used in TCM:

1. Strengthening the spleen and stomach: Sweetcorn is considered to be a neutral food that helps to strengthen the spleen and stomach, which are important organs for digestion and nutrient absorption in TCM.

2. Promoting urination: Sweetcorn is said to have a diuretic effect, which means that it helps to promote urination and remove excess fluids from the body. This can be beneficial for people who have edema or swelling caused by fluid retention.

3. Clearing heat: In TCM, sweetcorn is believed to have a cooling effect on the body and can help to clear excess heat. This makes it a good food to eat during the summer months when people are more likely to experience heat-related health issues.

4. Nourishing the skin: Sweetcorn is also believed to nourish the skin and promote healthy skin function. This is because it contains a number of vitamins and minerals that are important for skin health, such as vitamin C and beta-carotene.

5. Supporting the immune system: Sweetcorn is a good source of antioxidants, which can help to support the immune system and protect the body against oxidative damage.

Overall, sweetcorn is considered to be a nutritious and healthy food in TCM, with a range of health benefits. However, it is important to note that TCM should not be used as a substitute for Western medical treatments and advice, and anyone with a medical condition should always consult with a healthcare professional before making any dietary changes.
