I don’t put myself on here very often. but… here’s a little something about how I came to start Make Club and how it ties in with my practise as an artist.
Make Club runs every week for children on Mondays and NOW for adults on a Thursday evening. You can see the info over on Instagram Make Club Arts. Do join me to try one out. I am doing a February discount for new sign ups.
Where to begin?
1.I went to a brilliant primary school back in the seventies. It was called Prior Weston and it practised progressive education at the time when schools could make their own curriculum. It was like a training ground for the self employed. We had to manage our time with tasks that we had to cross off our list by the end of the week. They also believed in making, dancing, acting and exploring the world around us as central to learning, so thinking creativley it was embedded through everything we did. That really shaped me.
2. In the time before on demand TV I spent a lot of time making things out of card boxes.
3. I have spent my career making things from large scale lit sculpture for festivals to site specific installation for museums, communities and festivals.
4. After many years of making socially engaged projects in primary schools doing projects I became frustrated with working within set curriculum topics, so now I am putting that energy into Make Club. We can float between random themes that take our fancy, to using different materials or techniques. It’s always about trying things out.
5. After moving around a few different venues we are back in my studio. It is compact and relaxed and it’s the heart of who I am. Make Club is about enjoying making and thinking about different ways that we can use our creative skills in a broad way. It’s not about being able to draw correctly, more having the confidence to look closely and give it a go.
