How often do you say to yourself "when ‘this’ happens then I will be happy"
Now it may be true that if you pass your exams for example you will be happy, but too often we wait for an event to make us happy
You can make yourself happy in an instant by changing your thoughts
Think about the last time you were really happy
Now really focus on the detail of what happened to make you happy
Now close your eyes and re-imagine what your body felt like when you were happy
Where did you feel that happiness?
Was it a quickening of your heart beat?
Was it the smile on your face?
Did you have tears running down your face from laughing so much?
As you go through these memories - sit with that feeling for a while and smile
As you practice re-living happy thoughts - chemicals will be released in your body that will make you feel happy
Believe it or not you can practice being happy
Just like any other habit or muscle can be trained, you can train at being happy
The more you do this, the more your brain will subconsciously look for things that make you happy
I am always happy when I take my dogs out for a walk in the woods
I think the leaves emit chemicals that affect my mood and make me happier
I have practised imagining this and when I close my eyes and think of my dogs, it makes my skin tingle - it's lovely
Try it and practice this for yourself
What's your happy place?
How much attention do you pay to the thought you have?
Are your thoughts your own or are you following someone else’s ideas
Are you aware of the difference?
I had to read this quote a few times and think about it before it really sunk in
Most of us spend the day reacting to whatever comes up in front of us
The way we think about ourselves is often the product of how we have been treated and the significance we put to those events
Just because someone says something to you or about you, it does not mean it is true
Even the people who love us the most may give us labels that we don’t question and the label sticks for years and shapes the way we think
We may be given a nickname by our friends or family - a word that may be said in jest at something we did when we were young, but that name has stuck until adulthood
You do not have to be that person
You can choose what you and who you want to be
You have more power over your mind than you think
You wouldn’t let anyone harm your body, then why do we let them do it to our minds?
The wisdom from the Stoics of 2000 years ago still rings true today
How often have you found yourself in a situation that you found frustrating or that makes you sad?
How long did it take for you to do something about it?
Too often we put up with things because we feel helpless or it takes too much effort to change things
The reality is that there is always something we can do
Even if you can’t change the circumstance, you can change how you respond to it or how you feel about it
Negative thoughts create negative energy and over time this can wear you down
Think about what you can control and then if you don’t like how things are….
CHANGE IT!
Occasionally, you read a sentence that has a profound effect on how you approach your life and this quote that I heard today was one of those moments and I had to share it with you immediately.
Most of us live our lives in a reactionary mode and thinking about ourselves and what we need to do to get through the day
Of course, you care about those people you love and in medicine, you are constantly attending to the needs of other people
But how often are you aware of how you ‘touch other people’s lives?’
It is a subtle statement, but it is a fundamental shift in how you show up
This is no longer about your wants, needs or desires
This is thinking more deeply about how your words or actions can affect the lives of others
This can be as simple as making a conscious effort to smile at more people or to notice and compliment people when they do something positive
When you start working in a clinic, ward or in theatre, there will be people doing all kinds of jobs
Take the time to smile and acknowledge everyone, no matter their role or pay grade
Don’t just try and impress your seniors and ignore the rest
When you treat your patients, remember that they will listen to everything you say and how you say it
It will have consequences for them that you have no idea about
Take the time they need to understand their problem and feel that they are safe
Your experience of life will shift, and good things will happen to you
This is living your life as your best self

How do you develop boldness and courage to be your best self and to inspire and lead others?
You may not naturally feel courageous
You may be waiting for someone to make you feel courageous
It does not work like that, courage is something you summon up from within yourself
So how do you do it?
Start with listing the things that you are good at
If you don’t think you are good at anything - this is not true, but if you don’t have much self-esteem at the moment, think about the last time that you felt happy or good
Then explore what it was about that occasion that made you feel good and why
From there you can start to list things about yourself that you are good at
Then write out some statements and read them out loud to yourself
For example, if you made someone smile because you gave them a compliment, then you can say “I am kind” or “I am thoughtful”.
When you repeat positive statements about yourself to yourself, you strengthen those beliefs about yourself
Your self-esteem and courage flourishes
Self-esteem improves your boldness and from that you can do anything

How many hours have spent this week working on yourself? I don’t mean on the way you look, by either going to the gym or getting your hair and nails done. I mean how many hours have you spent on your personal development?
For most people, the answer will be either zero or less than 5 hours
How many hours do you spend studying each day? Maybe 6 or 7?
When you start working, you will often spend between 8-12 hours each day either at your job or doing courses to improve your career
Personal development means taking time to understand who you are, what your strengths are and thinking about what you want out of life; relationships, career, experiences etc.
For most people life just evolves, and you get through it, some are happier and more successful than others
But if you thought about what you want out of life and understood what you must do and learn to get there, you would be much quicker and more fulfilled
Personal development was new to me until 2 years ago, since then I have been on a high-speed journey to reading and learning as much as I can, and it has changed my outlook to life completely
I wish I had learnt this in my 20s
The first book I read was Prof Steve Peters – The Chimp Management – Mind management
It’s a great place to start your journey and understand why you have your thoughts, and why those thoughts can sabotage your success
All those hours you spend studying or working will be far more effective if you spend a little time working on yourself
Even just one hour a week of personal development will boost your success in studying, accelerate your career and improve your relationships – simply put this will change your life

Rush, rush, rush……appointments, deadlines, commitments. Our lives are full of constant incoming visual and auditory information at such a pace that our brains are congested and overloaded
This is a consequence of progress in technology and innovation, but the potential by-product is overload and burnout
Your brain is a unique biological computer
It needs time and space to process and grow
Sleep is essential for mental health and well-being, but it is not enough time to truly rest
Very few of us protect time during our waking hours to be still and allow our brains to empty
The benefits of mindfulness or meditation for a few minutes a day have been shown to reduce stress levels as measured by significantly lowered levels of the stress hormone cortisol
If you want to reach your full potential, be the best you can be, and feel happier, then start training your brain to be quiet and still for a few minutes a day
Give yourself the space and time to grow – it really does work
You need to see and protect this vein when you operate on the shoulder joint
Do you know what it is called?

Once in while you read a story that inspires you to change your life. Dr Mary Verghese’s story is one of profound determination to help the poorest of the poor after personal tragedy
Born in 1925 in India, Mary’s ambition was to be a doctor
But she was involved in a car accident and she was left paralysed from the waist down
She thought her career was over, but under the guidance of Dr Paul Brand, she realised that she could still perform hand surgery from her wheelchair
Mary went on to set up the first rehabilitation centre at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India
She helped thousands of patients affected by the devastating effects of leprosy
I read her biography as a teenager and it had a great impact on me
If you ever question why you are going into healthcare, then get a copy of this book and you’ll be blown away!
Studying is hard work. It takes time and commitment. Dedication and perseverance are required to get you through a degree.
But it is important to remember to have some fun
All work and no play will make you sick
I don’t mean that you shouldn’t take your work seriously.
I mean that you can inject some fun into your study
Study with friends and get into a regular habit of group work.
Learn by speaking out loud. Do silly accents, make up fun tests for each other.
It doesn’t really matter what you do
Just take a break from learning on your own and be playful!
Do you play it safe, or are you a risk taker?
As a child most of us are taught to ‘be careful!’ so that we don’t get hurt
You can hear parents yelling this across play parks all over the world
And it is true that being careful is important as a child
But as you become an adult, the rules needs a little flexibility
If you always played it safe then you would never know what you are truly capable of
Now I am not suggesting that you should go out and do something crazy, but I am saying that the people who change the world are the ones who take a calculated risk and go for it
It doesn’t matter if you fail the first time or even the 100th time.
Each failure is simply a chance to learn and grow, on your path to great success
You are capable of much more than you think 😃
Have you ever had big dreams for your life but then thought they were too difficult to achieve, so there is no point even trying?
Do you ever feel overwhelmed with study, personal relationships, or lack of money?
Do you look at other successful people and think, well, that could never happen to me?
Do you feel stuck?
Most people live in reaction mode, which means they react to events in their lives as they occur.
Sure, they may have a rough idea that they 1. want to have a successful career, 2. want to have a family, 3. want to live in a lovely house, 4. go on a nice holiday once a year.
Significantly few people spend time planning clear goals and being specific about what they want in detail.
This is why so many people drift through life, get to their middle age and then feel disappointed with their relationships and situation.
I wish that I had learned this when I was in my twenties. If you want anything in your life, you need to write down precisely what that is. Then look at the people who have already achieved those goals and learn what they did to get there.
Think about what sort of person you need to be to achieve that goal. What type of character traits do you need to learn? Practice them daily. Start small and build on your skills daily.
No one is an expert at anything when they start. But the most successful people in life have a goal and then a plan to get what they want.
It sounds too simple, right? Wrong! The first step is deciding what you what and then taking one step at a time to get there.
You can have anything you want.

Don’t make things harder than they need to be
Studying anatomy can feel a little bit like this dung beetle, shovelling p**p uphill!
You get to the end of a page and think you have it sorted and you then you close the page and try and remember it and it’s gone… the p**p has rolled to the bottom of the hill and you have to start again
Or maybe the size of the project seems enormous / almost impossible?
But it really does not have to be that way
Break it down into small sizes chunks and do a bit at a time
The Funky Professor video tutorials are on average 5 mins - enough time for you to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee whilst you sit back and let Prof Vishy take you through the most challenging of topics
This will save you hours and you will get to the top of that hill much quicker!
