The 14th Edition of The State of the Union: Insights and Highlights
📅 Event Dates: 23-25 May 2024
📍 Location: European University Institute, Florence
The 14th edition of The State of the Union saw a convergence of global leaders, experts, students, policymakers, and journalists at the European University Institute in Florence. The event was a platform for reflecting on pressing European issues and shaping future policies.
Highlight: Q&A Session with Josep Borrell
During a Q&A session, Friedrich Püttmann from LSE's European Institute posed a poignant question to Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the European Commission, regarding the EU's relationship with Turkey.
Josep Borrell's Key Points:
Turkey remains a candidate country, but the accession process has significantly slowed down.
There is a perception from Turkey that the EU does not take them seriously and is not interested in their membership.
The current state of relations is unsustainable and requires a decisive direction from the European Union.
"It’s important for Europeans to decide what we want to do with Turkey. We cannot continue keeping this in a state of limbo. The next legislature will have to say what kind of relationship we want to have with Turkey." - Josep Borrell

🌍Bringing together experts and practitioners, this panel examines Türkiye’s past and future role within NATO in light of the organisation’s 75th anniversary, its recent enlargement and current challenges.
🔍For 75 years, NATO has played an important role in the collective defence and security of the Euro-Atlantic area. Despite facing many challenges, including questions of cohesion within the Alliance, it remains intact and looks stronger than it has for years. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has brought unprecedented public interest in NATO’s role in European security. The benefit of NATO’s collective defence has led Finland and Sweden to end decades of neutrality to seek membership. Recent developments in the Middle East and the South Caucasus have further highlighted the possible role NATO can play for peace in Europe’s neighbourhood.
🎙Speakers will address the following questions:
How is NATO transforming to enhance its deterrence and defence capabilities against current and future challenges?
How has Türkiye contributed to European security and defence, and what is its role in an evolving NATO?
How can we interpret Türkiye’s more recent actions within NATO and during enlargement from the perspective of its national identity and broader foreign policy goals?
