The 16th November marks World Acupuncture Awareness Day – this global campaign is designed to raise awareness of acupuncture which has been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Human Cultural Treasure and which is practised in over 182 countries worldwide.
The heritage of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a complete medical system has a rich and varied history.
Did you know that sharp bone and stone instruments which were discovered in China and are said to having been used for “treating illness by pricking the body” are dating back to as early as 6000 BC?
Major developments during the Warring States Period as well as Confucianism, Daoism and 5 Elements theory helped shape not just Acupuncture but the entirety of TCM over the centuries. During the Middle Ages acupuncture finally reached Europe where the modern term was coined from the Latin acus and punctura.
Today, Acupuncture is accepted as an efficient therapy for pain relief, for example in osteoarthritis, sciatic pain or migraines. However, it can be useful in the treatment of other common health problems, including all aspects of women’s health, insomnia, anxiety, respiratory or digestive issues.
Here at the White Hart Clinic, we offer acupuncture 4 days a week administered by our team of very experienced acupuncturists. If you are unsure whether acupuncture could be helpful for your condition please don’t hesitate to contact us.

EXCITING NEWS at our FREE WEBINAR on Wednesday 27th September at 7pm - Menopause Movement and national leisure chain, Places Leisure, Wyre Forest Leisure Centre, share the results of the first ever impact assessment of a menopause fitness collaboration. We'll be looking at the short and long-term benefits for both clients and fitness training providers.
From the knowledge gained by completing the CIMSPA endorsed, Menopause Movement training course, Places Leisure's developed their 'Power through the Menopause' programme to fill a significant knowledge gap surrounding menopause. It aimed to arm women in their community with critical knowledge to navigate this life phase - based on participant feedback and the measurable outcomes, it certainly excelled in achieving its goals.

Menopause Health: Principles of Management
Figure 1 outlines the principles of managing menopausal health. Women who are going through the menopause all need different things, but the three that we all benefit from are sleep, good diet and exercise (Women in Sport 2018). A healthy balanced diet is key: if you only do one thing, then you should manage your blood sugar levels. The trick is to eat a combination of protein and complex carbohydrates with every snack and meal. Although no food is ever off the table, you should eat sugary food only once in a while (Lynch 2020). The big non- negotiable element of menopause management is exercise – and any movement counts (Grindler & Santoro 2015; McGonigal 2020)! There is an accelerated loss of lean muscle mass during the menopause, but exercise is good for bone (Kistler-Fischbacher et al. 2021a, b) and muscle, the cardiovascular and metabolic systems, and mental health. Your muscles are your greatest friends during the menopause (Foster & Armstrong 2018; Khalafi et al. 2021).
