Pregnancy care for type 1 diabetics 👇

Having a child with type 1 diabetes is possible, but it's important to plan accordingly to make sure you and your unborn child have a safe pregnancy every step of the way.

Preconception planning ⬇️
Establish optimal blood glucose levels and a safe HbA1c goal. If your HbA1c is extremely high, it may be advised for you to wait until this has lowered before trying to conceive.

Healthy diet, healthy pregnancy ⬇️
It's important to control your portion sizes and ensure you understand the glycaemic index during pregnancy. A specialist diabetes dietitian will be able to advise you on a tailored diet plan if required.

Insulin resistance during pregnancy ⬇️
Continual insulin adjustments should be made throughout your pregnancy. This is because as pregnancy continues, your insulin resistance builds, and may even be double what it was before pregnancy.

Preparing for breastfeeding ⬇️
As breast milk contains lactose, a type of sugar, you may develop hypoglycaemia when breastfeeding. That's why it's important to monitor your blood glucose carefully.

Preventing kidney disease when you have diabetes ⤵

🚫 Quit smoking
Smoking ci******es can reduce your kidney function due to reduced blood flow, as well as increasing the risk of kidney cancer.

🧂 Monitor your salt intake
Salt is essential for maintaining fluid balance and nerve & muscle function in the body. Too much in your diet can be dangerous, a high salt diet can increase blood pressure, which puts strain on the kidneys and potentially leads to kidney disease.

🥗 Nutrition is key
As well as managing your salt intake, it's very important that you develop a plan (preferably with a dietician), to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

💉 Blood tests
Be sure to get tested for CKD regularly, damage to your kidneys can be managed properly if found early on.

National Obesity Awareness Week, part 2.

In 2019, Diabetes UK found that the number of people who were obese in England had almost doubled in the last 20 years from 6.9 to 13 million.

It was found that obesity was one of the main factors in the increase of type 2 diabetes cases, accounting for 80 to 85% of someone’s risk.

How can we take action and help prevent and manage obesity? Read our three important tips ⬇️

⚫️ Consume less processed foods as well as those high in saturated fats and sugar.

⚫️ Swap these foods for healthier choices, such as plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrain rice, pasta and bread.

⚫️ Introduce 45-60 minutes of moderate-intensity activity into your day: this includes brisk walking, dancing, cycling and swimming.

Timeline photos 11/01/2022

According to a report from Diabetes UK, almost 1 in 10 people in the UK will have diabetes by 2030 amid alarming levels of obesity.

This is a frightening statistic.

That's why during National Obesity Week, we're focussing on two important issues 👇

⚫️ The relationship between obesity and diabetes.
⚫️ Obesity prevention.

100 years ago, Leonard Thompson became the first patient to receive an insulin injection.

The 14-year-old boy was dying from type 1 diabetes before being treated with the groundbreaking treatment, first discovered by Frederick Banting & Charles Best.

A few days after the first injection, which caused an allergic reaction, Thompson received a more purified form of insulin (extracted by the chemist James Collip). His diabetic symptoms began to subside and blood sugars returned to normal.

Thanks to this inspiring research and discovery, millions of lives have been saved, and it's safe to say that the London Diabetes Centre wouldn't be here without this groundbreaking treatment.

Not only are we able to provide tailored treatment to patients suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but we also specialise in diabetic care for children and adolescents, helping children understand how to monitor glucose levels, get the nutrition a growing child needs, and help each child or young person live well with diabetes.

Advances in medication 👇

During the last decade, there has been a substantial improvement in diabetes medication. Newly available medications now show good cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Finding the right medication is imperative for people with type 2 diabetes, as they are more at risk of developing problems with the heart, brain, kidneys and also the eyes and feet.

Coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease are up to four times more likely in people with diabetes.

Fat in the blood builds up and sticks to the inside of the blood vessels. When these deposits get large enough, they harden and narrow the arteries, restricting the blood flow and supply of oxygen.

Cholesterol blockages in the heart arteries are the most threatening to life as there is no collateral flow when an artery becomes blocked – and this is what happens during a heart attack.
