Understanding mental health is about breaking it down. Knowing that it’s not something only a few people go through, but actually 1 in 5 women experience it. We don’t really talk about it, but anyone can be affected, either in pregnancy or after birth.

Life experiences
Lack of support
Worries about the present or future
Trauma
All can contribute to developing symptoms.

However, the good news is that with the right care and support, it’s possible to recover. You can claim back your mind and body one step at a time. You can get medical support, talking support, community support through the NHS or privately. You are not alone and there are options to help you feel better.

It’s Black Maternal Health week and one of the themes is birth trauma. Birth Trauma is Feeling...

Unheard because no one listened
Powerless as you had no options
Left out of decisons that affected you
Unsupported
Hurt because you have no idea why things happened
In the dark because no one explained
Disconnected from your baby
Disconnected from your partner emotionally or sexually
Scared to have another baby because of what happened last time
Broken mentally or physically
Upset, angry or triggered by your experience
Sad, low or depressed
Guilty that you aren’t happy

It doesn’t matter how or where you birthed, it’s about how you were made to feel, and if it felt traumatic to you, then that’s it.

So if you have feelings like these, at any point before or after having your baby, know that you are not alone. Don’t push your feelings down or try to avoid them, because these big, valid feelings can spread through your life and into your future. They can become an unwelcome part of your everyday or go in deep, only to pop up years later. But there is hope.

Take the hard first step to acknowledge them and start to take back control. Look for support, whether physical or mental. There is so much help out there

When you have a connection with someone you feel comfortable and can share your thoughts and feelings openly. You know that the person knows you and will always be there for you; without judgement. Connection makes us feel seen, heard, safe and secure. Having the support of someone you are connected to makes a huge difference when going through birth.

They can speak up for your choices, be in-tune with your movements or create a safe space for you to be yourself.

Have you thought about your connection with your birth partner? Do you know what you need from them, and do they know how to support you?

A lot of our hypnobirthing course is about building the connection between you and your birth partner before providing the practical tools they can use to support you physically and emotionally.

Breastfeeding awareness week -

The theme this year is returning to work and funnily I was just speaking about this with my sister in-law. She’s headed back to work after almost a year with her baby and how to continue feeding has been on her mind. It won’t be easy emotionally or physically so being as prepared as you can helps.
- accept that your baby will likely be clingy and need you when you get home, que the extra cuddles
- accept that their feeding pattern will change perhaps a long feed when you gets in, and more feeds at night
- explore pumping at work. All work environments should provide somewhere you can pump and a space to store your milk. It’s not always obvious so have a conversation with HR and challenge your organisation if what is suggested isn’t right.
- be gentle with yourself and take it slow - you may have engorged b***s or feel emotional, that is ok, and there is support from family, friends or professionals xx.

I find fear debilitating. My mind runs through possible scenarios, weighs up to risks and then does nothing. My anxiety around what ‘could’ come next stops me from moving. I am literally stuck.

Time has gone so fast, and it doesn't feel like it's been 9 years since I learnt the power of women and became your mother. I'm honour to have that role, and the opportunity to guide you through life. It's not always easy, I don't always get it right, but it's all part of learning and growing together.

What do you want for your birth? What are your goals? Have you thought about all the things you want to have, feel or experience?

This is not a list of things you don't want, because the mind doesn't listen to the word 'DON'T'.

This is a list of all the things you DO want to focus on.

Imagine for a moment that you can decide what happens. That you can decide how comfortable you are.

Consider what is most important to you.

Then write it down, no matter how idealistic it sounds.

Build a picture of what your baby's birthday, looks, feels and is like. Fill it with things and people that love and support you. Make it your own, feeling good about it.

This is the first step.

It's goodbye to 2022 in less than an hour, and hello to the New Year. What comes with 2023 is impossible to guess, but I hope it brings happiness, peace, love and success.

I'm not one for resolutions, but instead intend to live in the moment, enjoy the little things, accept myself for who I am (flaws and all) and work to see the beauty in the journey.

2022 has taught me a lot about myself and I hope I keep learning and growing in confidence throughout 2023.

I wish the same for you xx
