Chase Stokes’ story has an undercurrent of loss attached to it. Despite the unfalteringly low moments that have happened right beside his highest highs, he has been left a man with a sword and shield of emotional resilience.

So how does this tie into his acting career? Well, he believes that, ultimately, art is a component of pain. “Look at Shakespeare – much of his work reflects that. Perhaps it’s not the best example, but I believe art has always been, and will forever be, intrinsically linked to emotional turmoil. If you can’t be honest with your emotions, then don’t choose art as your career field”.

Life-altering events lead to changes in the value system. Where does Stokes stand now, as opposed to five years prior? “When any form of success comes, your value system inevitably changes because life is now different. The things you once needed to survive or operate on a day-to-day basis are no longer the things you need anymore”.

But what is the driving force that makes him want to continue to be a vehicle of communication and tell more stories? “Storytelling, at its core, is simple. It’s human-to-human connection. And that’s what we need more of.”

Streaming on Apple TV+ is Lesley Manville’s new project Disclaimer. A psychological thriller directed by Alfonso Cuarón and based on the novel by Renée Knight, the actor plays Nancy Brigstocke, a bereaved mother whose loss of her son tears her marriage and self apart.

Her performance is heartbreakingly flawless, depicting a woman shattering internally from pain. But how does she do it? “There’s no formula. I can go there and I can go to these very dark places and I can perform all of those emotions that are required but I can absolutely walk away and have a glass of wine,” she answers.

This is far from being the first time she has had to dig deep and portray characters stricken with pain. “I couldn’t take those people home with me, it would be very unhealthy,” she says, pinpointing the years of improvisation with Mike Leigh as the foundation of separating yourself with work. “You have to always have your own antenna on the go. I couldn’t have played Mary Tyrone in [Eugene O’Neill’s] Long Day’s Journey into Night and stayed sane. You have got to let those go”.

Starring in Zia Anger’s 2024 movie, My First Film, which investigates a young director’s emotive responses to creation, growth, loneliness whilst getting an abortion, Devon Ross was taken by the narrative’s poignancy. “I think the fact that it’s a story that’s close to Zia – it’s practically her life – weaving such a vulnerable process like making something so close to you, like a baby that is hard to let go, is fascinating”.

The process of making this, also brought with it moments of self-reflection and further appreciation for film making - especially when its done with such a female-focused lens which is a notoriously rare thing. “It was really special because it was a woman’s story. A woman directed it, a woman wrote it, a woman shot it. When you’re young it’s so hard, especially when you’re trying to do something on a bigger scale and nobody trusts you or believes in you, and I think every young woman has probably experienced that in one way or another. So, I could totally relate to the movie.”

In 2012, after years of coming so close to the bright lights of success, this young man from Oxnard released his first mixtape, O.B.E Vol. 1, under the name Breezy Lovejoy.

It was a remarkable arrival for an unknown musician. And though his introduction into the mainstream turned heads, he was acutely aware of the years of silence beforehand. And so Breezy Lovejoy turned into Anderson .Paak, an artist you have to pay attention to otherwise you’ll miss the point. Literally.

“In the beginning, it was about detail. It was more about reminding people that slept on you, that they now have to pay attention. If they don’t pay attention to the dot, then I don’t have to pay attention to them,” he explains. “It was my little f**k you.” Four studio albums later and a reputation worth its weight in gold, the meaning behind Anderson .Paak has changed.

“It’s evolved into dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s. The dot symbolises versatility and exploring in telling as many stories through as many mediums as I can. The dot has evolved into more than just music. I’m now dipping into film and entrepreneurship. I’ve got a charity and I’m giving back to my family and other people’s families. The dot has turned into the world, like a little planet, if you will.”
