Last week, we took our team to Slovakia & Hungary with our friend & guide .

First stop was to visit to meet Szolti (and Bob! 🫏) where we tasted his energetic wines in his calm & picturesque vineyard. His cuvee, Porta #8, is a team favourite.

Next up in Slovakia we were hosted by for more delicious wine and a quick dip in the Danube. After breakfast, we were treated to a tour of their bakery where they mill their own flour to supply the area with their delicious sourdough. Thank you, .

Across the Danube and into Hungary, we met István of situated around Lake Baltic. His cellar was full of different wine vessels: barriques, amphorae, steel & more.

The grand finale was the Lees Brother’s wine fair at István’s estate. Loads of iconic winemakers showing their wines: Daniel Sage, Clos Lentiscus & Johannes Zillinger to name a few. Roland gave a fascinating talk on acidity in wine and the importance of balancing it within wine and food pairings.

Thank you for showing us round this incredible part of the world!

Next Sunday we are truly excited to welcome Robin Snowdon and Georgina Harvey of to Elliot’s Hackney! When our Group Wine Buyer first tasted their sparkling pink wine Lammas by chance on a trip to Bath it was such a special moment it sparked a curiosity to get to know this grower better.

A few weeks later Emily took some of our crew out to visit the vineyard in North Somerset where overlooking the fields of vines they tasted their 3 cuvees and 2 eau de vies. They also got to learn first hand all about Limeburn Hill, their biodynamic practises, treatment of the land and farming in the UK.

We’re so in love with them and what they do we’ve invited them to come and spend a day with us on the 3rd December where they’ll be on hand to talk through the wines. Our chefs will also be cooking dishes inspired by their visit that complement the sparkling orange, pink & red wines perfectly.

To join us you can book a table online via Resy and we’ll also keep some walk-in space.

Yesterday our chefs had a fun farm day at . Spending the day with the farmers, under the 25 degree sun no less, they experienced the process of growing the produce they use in the kitchen.
First they helped to mulch the planting beds with straw, which protects the soil and the plant, plus is a better alternative to plastic. They then planted rows of courgettes by making holes in the soil under the straw, filling it with manure, compost and then placing the courgette plant in.
After all this hard work they cooked up a feast together using produce from the various farms Shrub work with. Leafy salads and salsa verde were prepared to go along with delicious veggies and fresh bread cooked over an open grill.
To round out the day they took a tour of the rest of the farm and then a rewarding dip in the reservoir to cool off!
Thank you to Folx Farm and Shrub for having us for the day 💚

Day two of our excellent adventure in Catalonia took us to a small plot overlooking the Mediterranean, one of many .artigas has dotted around the Alella region where he is re-energising ancient vineyards. A man of many, many projects, we tasted ready to be shipped bottles alongside some still in tank either waiting to be bottled or still fermenting. Bursting with life these are the kinds of wines that are great to drink now, but also develop with age.
Next an unforgettable lunch at Cal Xim where we feasted on incredible seasonal + grilled Catalan dishes and local wines.
We rolled on through to our final stop to see Anna Serra and Toni Carbó of La Salada in Penedès. Standing in the vineyards originally bought by Toni’s great grandfather, we heard how they have taken traditional methods of growing and winemaking, but had to adapt them to current conditions. Like all the other winemakers we visited, we saw firsthand how the lack of rain from climate change was a serious threat and how the affects of drought resulted in lower yields. Although it’s a big challenge for them, we felt inspired by their resilience to overcome this and still create these beautiful wines. Before we left we were treated to a tasting of the new La Salada vintages as well as a few bottles from Anna’s brand new project under her name - one in particular we loved so much we finished off at the airport!
Muchas gracias to all the winemakers we visited for generously sharing their time and wines with us & to Fernando of for being the ultimate local guide.
