Capturing the essence of the humble vegetable with exquisite detail Onions, 1972 stands as a testament to David Hockney’s mastery of still life drawing. Positioned at the heart of the sheet, spanning its breadth, Onions exudes an undeniable elegance. Here, the interplay of light deftly accentuates the gently rounded contours of the pale onion bulbs, their form and colour creating a striking contrast with the graceful, sweeping strokes in shades of vibrant green that define the leaves.
Hockney’s keen attention to detail extends to rendering every delicate, wiry onion root. This drawing speaks to Hockney’s remarkable ability to elevate the mundane into the realm of the extraordinary.
