⏳ Don't miss the final week of Hannah Lim's exhibition!

✨ Hannah Lim stands alongside her captivating 'Orchid Table', a stunning fusion of Chinoiserie aesthetics and modern design. Lim explains, "I wanted to create this table-like structure, inspired by my previous sculptures in wood, that reimagine the Chinoiserie aesthetic. The table is designed and built around this central hanging orchid (...) I like this idea of the 'Orchid Table' looking somewhat enchanted and magical." The piece combines delicate and ornate elements with the weight of metal chains and balls, bringing together five years of research and multiple sculptural processes. 🌿🏮

🌀 Pick of the week from Pangolin London viewing's room is Eilis O'Connell's 'Furl', previously exhibited in her 2022 exhibition at the gallery, 'Breadth Becomes Air' 🌀

O’Connell’s thinking is a haptic journey of discovery, of herself, a material, a process and an image. As a maker the object is handled, turned, questioned, thought and felt; it is the feeling in both senses of the word that makes the object into sculpture. Never a minimalist but certainly a reductionist Eilis concentrates an object into its intense, essential form, through making.

🌟 Hannah Lim's 'The Enchanted Orchid' is open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am - 6pm until 14 September 🌟

On her work's anthropomorphic features, Lim says, "I liked this idea of making my work feel more playful and peculiar. By giving my larger and smaller sculptures these arms and legs it was almost as if I was imbuing them with a life of their own." 🐾

Did you know that art used to be an Olympic sport? Between 1912 and 1948, artists could win medals for sport-inspired art across five categories, including sculpture!🥇✨

🦁🌍 Celebrating World Lion Day with Geoffrey Clarke's exquisite brass lion medal.

Today, we highlight the work of Geoffrey Clarke (1924–2014), a pioneering British sculptor renowned for his bold experimentation with materials and processes. HIs innovative approach placed him at the heart of a vibrant post-war art scene.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, Clarke was one of the first in the UK to use the welding method in sculpture and preferred the use of aluminum over bronze, a cutting-edge choice in the 1950s.

Beyond sculpture, Clarke's prolific output spanned stained glass, jewellery, textiles, land art, and medals. His lion medal stands as a beautiful example of his remarkable versatility and vision.

'Orchids have been a reoccurring motif in my work for the last five years. I think they are extremely symbolic flowers, very delicate and beautiful and yet also resilient. The orchid, specifically the Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim, is Singapore’s National Flower. It’s a hybrid orchid and is meant to represent Singapore’s multicultural society.

I think every time I’ve gone to Singapore to see my family we’ve visited the amazing botanical gardens, home to many varieties of orchids and so I’ve come to associate orchids with my memories and experiences of Singapore. There’s also something quite creaturely and almost alien about the way some species of orchids look.' Hannah Lim

✨ Sneak preview of our interview with Hannah Lim - "After a while I wanted to slightly separate the designs of my S***f Bottles from myself and instead envision these sculptures as enchanted, animate objects. Alongside this, I had also begun to look more into Chinese mythology and wanted my S***f Bottles to be reflective of the creatures I had started reading about in Chinese and Medieval bestiaries. It has always made perfect sense to sculpt these peculiar, playful and intricate objects with creaturely arms, legs, paws and claws." ✨

💛 NEXT UP 💛
ANN CHRISTOPHER: SILENCE IS A POWERFUL SOUND

📆 25 September – 2 November
🍾 Private View: Tuesday 24 September, 6-8pm

“The title Silence is a Powerful Sound reflects my personal journey over the past three years. During this time, I experienced a profound silence, both in grappling with the challenges of making work and coming to terms with the eventual death of my partner Ken. This period of introspection has been marked by a significant transformation in my work. While unsettling, these silent moments are crucial for moving forward.” Ann Christopher, 2024.

The exhibition will include a new series of sculptures and drawings, alongside works from previous decades. 💫 Save the date! 💫

Comprising nine Walnut grid panels, Zachary Eastwood-Bloom's striking piece 'CPU' (Central Processing Unit) juxtaposes classical and contemporary elements to create a formal, structured aesthetic.

Crafted from square lengths of walnut, a beautiful dark and fine-grained timber, each piece was waxed to seal and enrich its colour before being meticulously cut.

This repetitive and methodical process became a meditative journey, completed over several months.

☀️ Basking in sunlight, Jon Buck's 'Ship to Shore' maquette stands as a vibrant testament to the connection between travellers and those waiting for their return.

'This sculpture has close associations for me. The four metre high version sits on the dockside of Port Marine, once Portishead Docks, in Somerset, the locale where I grew up.

‘Ship to Shore’ was a form of radiotelephone that connected the two and was based at Portishead. This sculpture really alludes to those who travel and those who wait for their return. In this way I am making direct reference to my own parents who more or less lived this life in that place.' Jon Buck

'The point at which I decide the colour varies. Sometimes I know from the start, other times I change my mind a few times during the process. Most of the time the decision is made because it ‘feels right’, so it is very intuitive. Using more than one colour is a continuation of my exploration of what colour can do for the form, and my love for colours. Sometimes I think it can further define the form as in 'Ridge' and 'Emergent Orange'.'
