‘Portrait of dazzle #228’ by
Acrylic on canvas
80.3 x 65.2 cm

Shigeki Matsuyama first became interested in the striking appearance and narrative of dazzle camouflage after watching a documentary on WWI. Feeling that the use of dazzle camouflage to deceive enemy ships reflected the deceptive allure of posts that appear beautiful on social media, he began to incorporate it as a motif to create these compelling pieces ▪️🔲

Installation shot of Shigeki Matsuyama’s solo exhibition ‘Portraits of Dazzle’

Drawing inspiration from the everyday world, Matsuyama's signature dazzle camouflage (a reference to WWI camouflage used by ships!) turns his subject matter into something otherworldly. The use of bold black and white stripes reflects the sense of omnipresent unease and distrust towards modern media that Matsuyama explores within his work. Portrait compositions with eyes piercing back at us, his new body of work 'Portraits of Dazzle' is imbued with both realism and dystopian influences.

‘Tags on white pots’ by
Acrylic on canvas

For Yohta Matsuoka, his work on canvas is much more deliberate than that in the streets. The intention is evident in his new body of work for the solo exhibition ‘Sincerity’. Carefully considered compositions display his mastery of still life techniques, infused with smaller details that pay homage to the street culture of Japan 🎑

‘Portrait of dazzle #237’ by
Acrylic on canvas
80.3 x 65.2 cm

To create his ‘Portraits of Dazzle’ Shigeki selects portraits from the countless selfies circulating on social media, covering all features with his signature monochromatic palette to leave an unidentifiable silhouette. He then overlays eyes taken from a different subject, creating otherworldly portraits of mysterious figures. Matsuyama’s unique creative process allows the artist to explore the anonymity and deceitful reality of online spaces, calling viewers to questions our relationships with technology, social media and self image 👤📱

‘There’s an Apple on the Pot’ by 🍎
Acrylic and aerosol on canvas
91 x 72.7 x 3 cm

Questions of perspective seem to be at the centre of Yohta Matsuoka’s work. When asked about the message that he aims to express through his compositions, Matsuoka answered:

“I believe that even the most mundane objects and familiar sights, like the apples frequently featured in my work, can appear different when viewed from another angle. I try to convey this by manipulating the composition of my artwork. From a broader perspective, it’s about not taking things for granted and recognising that even on the most routine days, no two days are the same.”

Acrylic and aerosol on canvas
