International Women’s Day this year is all about and as we’ve been at Futurebuild this week we kept our focus on women in construction and spoke with a few individuals for their inspiring words.
Rachel Heaton, industry engagement manager for construction says the following:
Having worked in construction and facilities management for over 20 years, traditionally a male-dominated sector, there is a vital need for change and growth when it comes to inclusivity. I am inspired to see that so many stakeholders across industry are now building on the lessons of the past and coming together to work towards lasting change.
Over the past week, we have been advocating GS1 standards in construction at Futurebuild. It has been a fantastic event and I have truly enjoyed the many conversations I’ve had with inspiring female professionals from across UK construction. It has also been great to see the use of GS1 standards gain momentum across the build environment and facilities management, and I look forward to our continued collaboration with members and partners to accelerate adoption further.
I would like to give special thanks to the following key groups who offer dedicated support and empowerment to women within the AEC industry, enhancing their skills, education and career progression.

It all began with a barcode
Beep! On 26 June 1974, a packet of chewing gum became the first barcoded product to be scanned in store. Today, barcodes play a crucial supply chain role, ensuring products hit retail shelves at the right times.
We manage the barcode standard used by retailers, manufacturers and suppliers. If you want to put a barcode on an item that can be scanned anywhere in the world, you need to talk to us.
But although our story started with the barcode, our standards have evolved to reflect and influence the world in which we live and work.
They boost efficiency in many sectors, from retail and health to transport and logistics. Always working for our members, we’re opening doors and driving down the costs of doing business.
