With it being such a hype, there obviously comes the usual attention seeking non-sense with it, and a lot of confusion of what is legit and how these things actually work.
Rest assured, as always I have done my due diligence and dug right into the research to make sense of it all for you. Health is more than what we eat, the supplements we take and exercise. Our mind plays a huge factor, via our cortisol system. Constantly being in fight-or-flight mode messes with our biology (inflammation, blood sugar, immune system, hormones, metabolism, hunger and satiety signaling, and the list goes on).
And our brain doesn’t recognize the difference between real or perceived danger, emotional or physical ‘stressors’. Are you ruminating about things that you can’t control, keeping you in fight-or-flight mode and pumping out cortisol non-stop?
From a functional medicine perspective, we also look at other factors, such as chronic infections, heavy metals or nutrient imbalances that can act like ‘stress’, and aim to restore these.
And lastly, and I will be talking more about this in future posts, but sometimes our brains are not functioning (and unable to make cognitive changes) due to inflammation (due to gut issues, etc), free radical damage or other factors messing with our serotonin, dopamine and other neurotransmitter production. Once the brain is biochemically balanced, cognitive behavioral therapy might work much better! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Did you know that depending on where on your monthly cycle you are, your body can be more or less prone to injuries?
While estrogen is crucial for bone and muscle health, it also affects our ligaments and tendons, making them softer.
Just before ovulation, around day 10-13 of the cycle, we have a steep rise in estrogen, making us more prone to ligament injuries!

I personally believe that it is ok to indulge a little on special occasions, if that is important for that individual to help them bond, have fun and enjoy life. How to navigate the holidays and indulge - while staying healthy-ish! Merry christmas to you! Thank you for being part of my community, and well done for making healthy living a choice. But with christmas upon us, are you like many of my patients, and worried about overeating, indulging, and ruining all your hard worked for results over the holidays?
Jokes aside 😂…
I generally believe it’s ok to indulge a little for special occasions if that’s important for the person, in particular if they involve social connections and quality time with loved ones.

important for a healthy, fulfilled life. ❤️
However, to mitigate things, I generally advise my patients of following tricks to not feel entirely rubbish after:
Holiday tricks to stay healthy-ish over the festive period:
👉🏻 Whenever the meals aren’t compulsory, add some intermittent fasting, to give your body time to clean up (plus keep overall calories down)
👉🏻 Wait with alcohol until late afternoon/ evening, as once one has started to drink, you’ll be more likely to overeat
👉🏻 Stay hydrated, and eat protein & veg first. Then see if you’re still craving those treats.
👉🏻 Eat until you’re about 3/4 full, then wait 20 minutes and see if you still really want that second serving.
