Great to see Joseph Newman, University of Cambridge, image 'Making digital health a walk in the park' shortlisted for the British Heart Foundation's "Reflections in Research" competition! Make sure to vote by 12 September💜

Making digital health a walk in the park by Joseph Newman, University of Cambridge.

This action shot is a demonstration of a new type of exercise capacity test for patients with cardiopulmonary disease, called the ‘digital 1-Minute Walk Test’. The test involves walking as far as possible in one minute, while wearing a smartwatch paired with a bespoke smart phone app. Here, old analogue measuring equipment is being used to validate new digital technology. The system – which was co-designed with patients – captures distance walked, heart rate, and step count. This short, simple, and user-friendly test can be done remotely at home or outdoors, reducing the time, cost, and stress associated with attending hospital. This patient-centred test has been used to accurately assess the health and fitness of dozens of patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (a rare and incurable disease that causes high blood pressure in the lungs), and is now being adopted into real-world clinical trials.
