This fun test is called a contrast illusion – first described by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1892.
These illusions can cause us to perceive objects differently due to their surroundings. It can also be used to test your attention – because if you aren't looking carefully, you might be fooled…
Believe it or not, both circles are actually the same size!
This test is for fun only. It is not meant to diagnose or treat any eye related health or vision conditions.

This week is Glaucoma Awareness Week 💚
Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. It's usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye.
Did you know there are 4 types of glaucoma?
1. Primary open-angle glaucoma. This is the most common type of glaucoma and can develop over many years without showing any symptoms at first.
2. Acute open-angle glaucoma. This is an uncommon type of glaucoma caused by suddenly blocked drainage of the eye, which raises the pressure in the eye rapidly.
3. Secondary glaucoma. This is caused by an underlying eye condition, such as inflammation of the eye.
4. Childhood glaucoma. A rare type of glaucoma that occurs in very young children, caused by an abnormality of the eye.

Experience clarity whilst driving thanks to polarised sunglasses 🕶️
These lenses are designed to reduce glare that reflects from flat, horizontal surfaces for example the reflected sunglare from a wet road surface. Reflected glare can cause distractions on the road and impair your vision which can make it difficult when driving. Alongside this, polarised lenses can improve colour and contrast so you can experience clear, comfortable vision everytime you drive.

High blood sugar levels can cause damage to your retina leading to a condition called diabetic retinopathy which can lead to possible vision loss if untreated. Are you at risk? Factors include long-standing diabetes, persistent high blood sugar, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
If you have diabetes, consider the tips below to lower the risk of diabetic retinopathy:
🥗 Maintain a healthy diet
🏋️♀️ Stay active

👁️ Schedule regular eye examinations
Are you wearing the right sunglasses whilst driving? 🚗🕶️
Category 2 sunglasses are deemed the safest to drive in, and most sunglasses are created under this category. Avoid wearing sunnies with yellow lenses, lenses with light transmission of less than 75% and Category 4 tints, as these are not road-friendly.
Here are two essential tips for choosing the right sunglasses:
1️⃣ Look for British CE standard marking and UV400 protection for effective eye care.
2️⃣ Ensure your lenses are Category 2 tint-approved by the Association of Optometrists.

Photochromic lenses react to UV, turning your glasses from clear into sunglasses with a comfortable shade. But how?
These lenses contain molecules that react to UV rays. When exposed to sunlight outdoors, these light-sensitive molecules change characteristics and darken the lenses. When the invisible UV light decreases, the molecules return to their untinted state, and the lenses return to clear right before your eyes.
Try photochromic lenses for yourself, ask for a demonstration in practice

A recent article published by highlights the huge impact eye exams can have on people's lives.
Katie Everett, 31, was attending her regular eye examination when her optician spotted some abnormalities in both of her eyes. She was then referred to a hospital for an MRI scan where they later diagnosed her with meningioma, the most common type of primary brain tumour.
Katie believes and gives credit to her optician for spotting the tumour that could have otherwise gone unnoticed. Thanks to early intervention, she underwent successful treatment and is now living happily and healthy 🙌

Kids' sunglasses are a must-have this half-term 😎
Remember, protecting their eyes is just as crucial as it is for adults. 80% of UV damage occurs before the age of 18, because children's pupils are larger and let in 70% more UV than adults, meaning their eyes are more vulnerable to sun damage.
Why not invest in a pair of sunglasses for your kids before summer?

Did you catch the latest from ? Late last year they introduced a feature exclusively to their watches called watchOS that aims to track the time spent in daylight. With myopia (short-sightedness) affecting over 30% of the global population, which is expected to rise to 50% by 2050, Apple's innovation is a step towards better eye health.
Encouraging kids to spend 80–120 minutes outdoors daily can help reduce myopia progression. Now, with the ambient light sensor in Apple Watches, monitoring daylight exposure is easier than ever through the health app. Parents can pair their child's watch to their own, so that no matter where they are they can keep an eye on how much time their child is spending outdoors.
Why not treat yourself to a brand new pair of sunnies this season - we love these two styles!
The earthy and classic colours are perfect for this time of year, blending beautifully with light, neutral shades in your wardrobe. Stand out in style while staying on-trend this season 💚

Many people are unaware that the UV from the sun can affect the health of our eyes, which can lead to an increased risk of developing certain eye conditions. UV protection is crucial, so we want to raise awareness about some of the different eye conditions that are linked to high levels of UV exposure.
1️⃣ Cataracts - this is a condition that causes the lens of the eye to become cloudy and wihout intervention can lead to blindness. The World Health Organization estimates that 20% of cataracts are related to UV exposure.
2️⃣ Age-related macular degeneration - AMD is one of the leading causes of blindness in the UK. It affects the central part of the vision which can make it difficult to read, drive, and recognise faces. Studies show the condition may develop sooner in people who've been more exposed to UV light.
3️⃣ Pterygium - This is a benign growth (non-cancerous) that forms on the outer tissues of the eye. It is quite common in surfers as they spend long periods in the sea exposed to UV light, with the reflected UV from the water surface increasing the effects.
4️⃣ Photokeratitis - this condition is caused by short-term but high exposure to UV light and is where the eye's surface becomes 'sunburnt', leading to soreness, pain and in some cases temporary sight loss.
