As it’s International Dog Day today, we thought we’d give a shout out to our (super cute) doggy brand ambassadors here at Lily’s Kitchen. 🐕 So, without further ado, say hello (or woof) to our furry friends.

Excited is an understatement.

Danielle is one the volunteers at Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline, the LGBTQIA+ helpline we’re supporting this Pride season, by donating 100% of profits* from the sale of our Love & Pride recipes in the UK. Inspired by the charity’s incredible history (Switchboard has been providing pivotal help for LGBTQIA+ people since 1974) and their ongoing work, we spoke with Danielle about her role and its impact.

“My role at Switchboard has helped me better understand the complexities of sexuality, gender identity and expression and I enjoy speaking with and listening to our Service Users. Sometimes a simple conversation or saying things out loud can really help and when I speak with callers you can sometimes hear the change in tone and sense of calm at the end of a call and this is incredibly rewarding. It is really hard to put into words how incredible the work Switchboard does is and the impact it has. Even when shifts are quiet and we don't get loads of calls, leaving the phone room knowing you have spoken to and supported just one person is an incredible feeling. It makes me feel really proud to be part of a community that comes together to support each other.”

We can learn a lot from the boundless, unconditional love we receive from a pet, and Danielle’s gorgeous dog Frank is a perfect example. “Frank is always there for me and gives me unconditional love. Whether I've had a long day at work or a difficult shift for Switchboard he is always excited to see me. Regardless of my mood, appearance, or actions, he remains loyal and loving. This teaches us the importance of accepting others without judgment and this is something that is really important to me and wider LGBTQIA+ communities.”

Let’s talk about impact! As a B Corp (and the first pet food company anywhere in the world to become a B Corp!) we use our business as a force for good. That means we measure our impact on the world around us, our team, and our customers. We’re in a recertification year, which means that we’re being reassessed on how we deliver on our B Corp commitments. We’ve got everything crossed that we will improve on our existing score of 92.3! 🤞

A key tool to help us stay on track is our Impact Report, or as we like to call it, our Paw Print for Progress. Each year we review everything we’ve done, where we’ve hit our targets and where we’ve got room for improvement – all of this, and more, goes into the report.

This year’s report has a whole new structure and considers everything we’ve done in three sections: Beyond Business as Usual, Sourcing with Care and Reducing Our Pawprint. This reflects some significant projects we’ve established on the way to the next step in our sustainability journey. 🐾

This summer, we’re proudly supporting the national LGBTQIA+ support line, Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline , by donating 100% of profits* from the sale of our Pride recipes in the UK towards the essential work they do to champion the LGBTQIA+ communities.

We spoke with one of the charity’s volunteers, Jack, who described working for Switchboard as a “Rewarding and enjoyable opportunity to give support to the community of which I am part of.”

On the incredible affect pets can have on people’s mental health, Jack said, “Whether you’re having a good day or a bad one, knowing that you’re going home to someone who will be happy to see you regardless is so nice. Especially if you have a sensitive pet that can pick up on your emotions. Pets will always make a room brighter and they make such a difference to your life. They’re there for a short time but leave the biggest footprints in the sand.”

During this year’s Pride, we‘ve partnered with Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline, a national helpline that has been supporting, listening to and connecting with LGBTQIA+ communities since 1974.

As part of our campaign, we’re donating 100% of profits* from the sale of our Love & Pride recipes in the UK to support their ongoing, vital work.

To learn more about the charity, we caught up with volunteer, Bea, to discuss her experience working with Switchboard.

“Switchboard has helped me understand what is affecting our community today in a very immediate way. It’s a totally unique, direct, and confidential line of communication with the community I love - with our most vulnerable people who need reassurance and support, with our people who need someone to just hear them out and let them vent, with our people who need information and don’t know where else to turn. Selfishly, it’s been such a rewarding experience to anonymously connect with each and every one of the service users I’ve chatted with thus far - they teach me so much on every shift, and I really think I’m becoming a better person for it. It makes me feel like part of something really pure and good.”

Of course, we had to ask Bea about her furry friend, Púca. “I honestly think Púca is an emotional genius. My boy is just so intuitive - he knows when I need a cuddle or to shake off a shift (when a chat has been very emotional and the stakes have been very high, or perhaps demand has been really high and I’m feeling a little burnt out), and he knows when I want to happy dance in celebration because we’ve just helped someone out of a really negative or confused head space (in case you’re wondering: ABBA in PJs!).”
