It would be remoss of us not to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of our home, Camden Market, which according to Wikipedia first started to coalesce OTD in 1974. General Eyewear has been here since around 1997 and has greatly benefited from the many counter-cultural presences which have surrounded and visited us throughout these years.

Pictured image is of Martin Margiela and Jean Paul Gaultier on the Horse Hospital ramp, presumably between 1984 and 1987 when Margiela was Gaultier's assistant. Gaultier remained a constant present throughout the 90s clearly feeling the need to channel the Market's energy and creativity.

Delusions of Grandeur or more accurately an elevated sense of purpose or even an obsession bordering on the maniacal, is what has driven General Eyewear over the last 27 years to collect, assemble, order, conserve and develop every possible artefact, fragment, document, tooling and prototype relevent to our chosen object:

Bespoke and Micro-production of Artisanal Eye Glasses in Camden and Soho

GENERAL EYEWEAR: ARTISANAL EYEWEAR + VINTAGE ARCHIVE + DESIGN STUDIO

General Eyewear designs and makes distinctive artisanal eyewear either as bespoke commissions or as part of our on-going micro-production of ready to wear pieces.

All our work is formed by knowledge and experimentation.

Over many years General Eyewear has acquired important archives of historical European factories and workshops, and the prototypes, drawings and studies contained within them inform the way we think about what we do. We are immersed in these archives, which physically surround us where we work, and strive to create from these European traditions a way of thinking and connecting which has allowed us to establish our very own manufacturing and design culture.
