As a kid I growing up in Kuala Lumpur, I'd never seen snow but was low-key obsessed by it and wanted a snow globe (what I called "snow scenes" after I heard them being called that on Eight Is Enough).
In December 1984 I suffered a massive collapse while on holiday in England visiting my mum's family. Rushed to where they tested me for hours, trying to diagnose my left sided paralysis, throwing up, partial blindness, trying to narrow it down. I was barely conscious only aware I was being asked questions, convinced I was moving both arms, when only my right hand side was moving. I'd had a seizure while there but it passed. I was blind in one eye and could only see shadows and shapes from the other. And the massive, massive pain in my head.
A lumbar puncture later and they diagnosed correctly the massive bleed I had and had to be transferred to where they had the medical facilities. Another ambulance, mum holding my hand all the way, dad and brother in the car behind.
A few days later, a full diagnosis and a wait for the swelling to go down before I could be operated on. During the 5 hour operation, mum looked up and down the shops looking for a snow scene but nobody really knew what she meant. Desperate to find me one in the hope that it would make me better she tried everywhere. For the first time she went to a church to pray...
Back on the ward, I opened my eyes. A paper decoration on the wall, a clown with a green top and orange trousers made of concertina'd paper, pencil-coloured orange. A round smiling face made from a paper plate. I could see.
When I was well enough to walk down the hall unaided, the ward sister took me down to the front lobby, on watchful standby. It was January and Hull had a smattering of snow, enough to cover the ground. Cold and hard but melted wet and crunchy underfoot.
I have painted these snow scenes since 2012 where I remember car journeys through the snow seeing the South Lincolnshire landscape go by. They remind me of that time, thankful for my time now.
l never forget the NHS nurses and doctors and physio therapists that took care of me.
Totally awestruck by last night, taken thanks to Tina Chiang, with the unexpected surprise that the amazing Sharon Duncan Brewster with 1 rehearsal gave a blistering performance.

I love this man's poetry
IT’S STILL POSSIBLE
It’s still possible to fully understand
you have always been the place
where the miracle has happened:
that you have been since your birth,
the bread given and the wine lifted,
the change witnessed and the change itself,
that you have secretly been, all along,
a goodness that can continue
to be a goodness to itself.
It’s still possible in the end
to realize why you are here
and why you have endured,
and why you might have suffered
so much, so that in the end,
you could witness love, miraculously
arriving from nowhere, crossing
bravely as it does, out of darkness,
from that great and spacious stillness
inside you, to the simple,
light-filled life of being said.
