🌟 Celebrate Hungary's Rich Heritage on 20 August!🌟

Join us in commemorating the official state holiday of Hungary, a day filled with history, tradition, and festivity. On this special day, we honour the founding of our state and our revered founder, King St Stephen.

A Day Steeped in History:
20 August is not just a national holiday; it's a cornerstone of Hungarian identity. Established by King St Stephen, this day has weathered countless changes, from being banned under communist rule to being secularised as the Feast of the New Bread. Today, it stands as a testament to Hungary's resilience and enduring spirit.

Traditions Old and New:

- Saint Right Procession:
Witness the historic procession of King Szent István's hand relic through Budapest, a tradition revived post-1989.
- Bread Blessing Ceremony: Enjoy the symbolic consecration of the first bread made from new wheat, a beloved folk custom.
- The Country's Cake:
Indulge in Hungary's "birthday cake," a delightful result of a national confectionery competition. This year's winner, MÁKVIRÁG by Alfréd Kovács, is a masterpiece of poppy seeds, black currants, and white chocolate cream. Plus, don’t miss the sugar-free cake, "Green Raspberry" by Ádám Novák and László Csonka, perfect for health-conscious dessert lovers.
Honouring Our Legacy:
Today, we celebrate not only our history but also our culture and community. With prestigious state honours and awards, including the Order of St. Stephen, this day is a proud reflection of our national heritage.
Gather with family and friends, partake in the festivities, and savour the flavours of Hungary.
20 August is a day to reflect on our past, cherish our traditions, and look forward to a bright future. 🎉🇭🇺

🇭🇺✨ Return of the Holy Right✨🇭🇺

On this day in 1771, Hungary welcomed back the revered relic of St. Stephen's right hand after years of diplomatic efforts led by Queen Mária Theresia. This sacred relic, cherished since the Middle Ages, journeyed from Székesfehérvár to Ragusa (modern-day Dubrovnik) before finally returning home.
The relic's arrival was marked by an ornate procession and public veneration reflecting Hungary's deep respect for its founding king. 📜

Let's honour the legacy of St. Stephen and the enduring cultural heritage of Hungary.🇭🇺✨

🌟 Celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! 🌟
𝟏𝟓 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 marks the biggest Marian feast in the Catholic Church and honours 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐲's patron saint.

This sacred day, known historically as the "Dormition" or "Pausatio," celebrates Mary’s transition to heavenly glory. Declared a dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950, the Assumption highlights Mary's ascent to heaven, body, and soul.
This tradition dates back to early Christianity and became an official holiday in 847 AD by Pope Leo IV.
In Hungary, King St. Stephen commemorated this day with legislative assemblies and ultimately dedicated the nation to the Virgin Mary.
The feast is deeply rooted in Hungarian culture, marked by pilgrimages, processions, and the celebration of femininity and motherhood.

Join us in this time-honoured celebration, reflecting on the legacy of the 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲, the "Woman clothed in the Sun" from the Book of Revelation, and participate in customs like the consecration of flowers. 🌸✨

Commemorating Adam Clark, the Scotsman Who Built Modern Budapest 🏗️🏴

The Scottish civil engineer Adam Clark is celebrated for constructing the Széchenyi Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd) 🌉, the first permanent bridge over the Danube River in Hungary 🇭🇺, linking Buda and Pest. He also designed the Buda Tunnel 🚇, and the square between the bridge and tunnel is named after him. This square is the official point of origin for Hungary’s road network, marked by the sculpted “zero kilometre stone” at its centre.

Clark supervised other significant projects, including the construction of the Lipótmező Mental Health Institute 🏥 and the roofs of the Dohány Street Synagogue ✡️.

After the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence, Clark retired from public life but played a crucial role in saving the Chain Bridge. Learning of Austrian plans to blow up the bridge, he sabotaged their efforts by flooding the chain chambers, preventing mines from being placed. Although the Austrians used powder kegs on the bridge itself, the detonation caused minimal damage.

Happy Birthday to the legendary sculptor 𝑱𝒂́𝒏𝒐𝒔 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒐́! 🎉✨

As we celebrate his legacy, let's compare his iconic Lion Statues of the 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 in 𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭 and the majestic lions at 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 in 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧, right near our building!

🦁 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝟏𝟖𝟓𝟐)

- Sculptor: János Marschalkó
- Location: Chain Bridge, Budapest
- Significance: These lions were part of the first bridge connecting Buda and Pest, symbolising unity and architectural wonder. Despite a legend claiming Marschalkó forgot their tongues, he proved critics wrong by showing that real lions don’t always display their tongues.
- Historical Impact: The Chain Bridge was destroyed near the end of WWII but was rebuilt and reopened in 1949, exactly 100 years after its original completion.

🦁 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝟏𝟖𝟔𝟕)

- Sculptor: Sir Edwin Landseer
- Location: Trafalgar Square, London
- Significance: These four bronze lions guard Nelson's Column and symbolize British strength and bravery. Known for their realism, Landseer used real lion corpses and paintings for reference, making them highly detailed and lifelike.
- Historical Impact: Trafalgar Square is a central London landmark, commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar and serving as a gathering place for celebrations and demonstrations.
𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 represent more than just artistic mastery; they embody the historical and cultural significance of their cities.
From Marschalkó’s craftsmanship in Budapest to Landseer’s iconic sculptures in London, these lions continue to inspire awe and admiration.
Join us in celebrating János Marschalkó’s birthday and the lasting legacy of his art! 🎂❤️

Happy Birthday to the legendary Hungarian writer 𝑮𝒆́𝒛𝒂 𝑮𝒂́𝒓𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒚𝒊, born in 1863! 🎉

Gárdonyi, whose real name was Géza Ziegler, is a towering figure in Hungarian literature, best known for his historical novel "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon" (𝐄𝐠𝐫𝐢 𝐜𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐤).
This masterpiece vividly recounts the heroic defence of the 𝐄𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 against the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, capturing the spirit of Hungarian resilience and bravery. Gárdonyi's life was as fascinating as his works.
He was known for his reclusive nature, often retreating to his study, where he penned many of his significant works. His tombstone bears the inscription "𝐂𝐬𝐚𝐤 𝐚 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞" ("Only his body"), signifying his belief in the immortality of the soul and his enduring presence in Hungarian literature.
Beyond "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon," Gárdonyi's other notable works include "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧" (A láthatatlan ember) and "Ida's Novel" (Ida regénye), which further showcase his versatility and deep understanding of human nature.

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Géza Gárdonyi, whose storytelling continues to inspire and resonate with readers around the world.
Boldog születésnapot, Gárdonyi Géza! 📚✨
