We are honoured to be hosting Rabbanit Chana Henkin, founder and dean of Nishmat, The Jeanie Schottenstein Center for Advanced Torah Study For Women, on Sunday 11 September at Shomrei.
Join us for a shiur by Rabbanit Henkin followed by her in conversation with Rebbetzin Shalvie Friedman.
Rabbanit Henkin has transformed the landscape of women’s Torah learning and is a highly regarded Torah teacher with many students across the world.

In May of this year, the Institute for Jewish Policy Research ("JPR") reported that 26% of British Jews were now Haredi (76,000 out of 292,000) and that this would rise to 40% by 2040, likely then to be the highest share of any Jewish community in the world. This compares to a worldwide proportion of 14% now, rising to 23% by 2040. This rise is driven by high fertility, very high life expectancy (at the same level or higher than non-haredim) and high retention rates among Haredim, and low fertility and low retention among the non-haredim.

This has profound implications for Britain's Jewish community - its priorities, its funding arrangements and its political organisation and representation.

To address these issues we are being joined by Eli Spitzer, formerly Headmaster of Talmud Torah Tiferes Shlomo boys' school and now of a new Chasidic boys school, a prolific blogger, broadcaster and writer, and a highly articulate and unapologetic advocate for the Haredi lifestyle. He will be in conversation with Richard Bolchover and subsequently will respond to questions and comments from the audience.

On Shabbat evening our Summer Seudat Shelish*t Speaker Series continues. We have the pleasure of hearing from Joanne Greenaway this week and will be celebrarting Sheva Berachot for Danny Kessler and Tash Pein!

Our Shomrei Summer Seudat Shelish*t Speaker Series continues this Shabbat afternoon with guest speaker Dr Raphael Dascalu. Raphael is an expert on medieval Judaeo-Arabic thought and literature and is currently a visiting fellow at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

This is a joint service with Hampstead Synagogue at Shomrei.

We are fortunate to have a guest derasha this Shabbat morning by Dr Shira Weiss.

Shira is currently Assistant Director of the Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership of Yeshiva University and teaches Jewish Philosophy at Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies. She has been awarded various prestigious acamedic fellowships and is the author and editor of a number of books.
