A Susan Phillips ‘Soft Sexy Soul’ original copy has just sold for $20,000 (£15,500), making it one of the most expensive sales on Discogs ever! We at Soul Brother reissued this fantastic 1971 Soul, Two Step and Rare Groove album on Record Store Day of 2017, and still have a few copies leftover. Dorothy Ashby’s incredible ‘Afro-Harping’ has arrived on reissue from Cadet Records! Originally released in 1968 as her first album on Chess, this classic is a beautiful mix of 60s cool grooves and orchestral jazz. Remastered from the original 1/4 tapes for the first time, ‘Afro-Harping’ is a Richard Evans production filled with hypnotic grooves that accompany Ashby’s delightful harp leading the band. It features some unreleased alternate takes and an 8-page booklet, all housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve LP. Here’s a further rundown of this soul-jazz masterpiece from Laurence himself. Hot off the press from Kent Records! Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford’s fantastic single ‘I’m In Love’, produced by Ronnie McNeir, with Carolyn Crawford’s ‘It Takes A Lotta Teardrops’ on the flip has just come in. Originally released in 1971, this reissue is is a lesser-known classic for any lovers of modern soul or two steppers.

You heard the man! Music On Vinyl’s new reissue of ‘It’s Rough Out Here’ by the Modulations has just come in. Limited edition of 500 copies on yellow vinyl, featuring the amazing MFSB. This 1975-released album is an absolute must for any lovers of 70s soul. Available in store and on the website!

Sy Smith’s deliciously sweet and soulful album released at the start of the year is here! This release on Foreign Exchange Music is hands down some of the best R&B/soul on offer at the moment. Smith’s buttery, delicate vocals and wide melodic range are at times reminiscent of the likes of Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams, and the rich production and uses of instrumentation that support her are what ultimately makes an excellent album that you would be foolish to miss out on.

A little round up weekly scorchers.
Fantastic new releases and reissues in the soul department this week which includes a cracking album from Leela James ‘Thought U Knew’ as well as two classics from Candi Staton, and a smattering of singles on BGP.
We are also really excited to have in the brand new edition of NRG. This is a very limited private press album from the composer/drummer Chiminyo. The album is full of fellow jazz luminaries operating on the circuit, a cracking release and chance to have something in the collection that no one else will!
