The QMUL Digital Implant Course with Straumann (Level 1) was purely full of smiles at the Royal London Dental Hospital.

Our guests came from Hong Kong, Cornwall, Liverpool and we had everyone from Maxillofacial Consultants to General Dentists to Specialists all joining in with our Implant Team for 2 days of intensive digital dentistry training.

We went through the research out there to consider the limits and benefits of digital dentistry, to doing multiple cases on Codiagnostix and guide designs, running through IOS strategies, practicing guided surgeries and even going through Smilecloud.

Prof Shakeel Shahdad, Dr Mital Patel, myself and the QMUL implant team were grateful to all our guests for learning with us. We all had a great deal of fun with you all.

Last Friday Team SDS was at the conference (The British Assoc. of Oral Surgeons) presenting on implant dentistry.

Charlotte Stilwell who is also the international President of the (International Team of Implantology), Shakeel Shahdad who is a Professor of Oral Rehabilitation and Implantology, Clinical Lead and Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at .dental and Michael Myint who is a specialist in Prosthodontics gave a talk on how we provide you with predictable, safe implant treatments and ensure the treatment is patient driven.

It has been great fun for the Implant Team at SDS to share their thoughts on decades of outcomes. Also to have who is not only the past president of BAOS but the Dean of the Dental School at Barts & The London to chair the presentation and have the SDS oral surgery team be there with special mention to Ed Bailey and Samy Darwish has been the icing on the cake (we hope sugar free of course).

DAY 30

2015 - 26y old male with root fracture in a post-retained crown UR1 and near complete loss of labial bone plate. Tooth was extracted and Type 2 implant placement carried out. Interproximal bone loss in rotated UR2 is noted, with complete collapse of soft tissues prior to implant surgery.

Tissue Level Straumann implant (4.1RN) was placed with simultaneous GBR with particulate bone graft and collagen membrane (Geistlich BioOss & BioGide).

The aesthetic outcomes in this case were achieved except a deficient distal papilla, which was compromised due to the rotated UR2 . Labial bone of 3.4mm thickness was regenerated which supported the alveolar contour of the implant crown.

DAY 29

2013 - 58y old female with failing post-retained crown and previously attempted apical surgery in UR2. Tooth was extracted and CBCT prior to implant surgery confirms complete loss of labial bone plate. Thick gingival biotype.

Tissue Level Straumann implant (3.3NNC) was placed with simultaneous GBR with particulate bone graft and collagen membrane (Geistlich BioOss & BioGide). Submarginal incisions in adjacent teeth to avoid recession in existing crowns.

An excellent aesthetic outcome was achieved and labial bone thickness of nearly 4mm’s was regenerated supporting the alveolar contour of the implant crown.

Note the regenerated bone coronal to the SLA/Machined collar junction - something that we have consistently noted in our cases and a strong evidence for contour augmentation supporting the Bused protocol.

2008 - 19y old female presenting with traumatic loss of UL1 and loss of vitality in UR1 and UR2. Thin gingival phenotype. Tissue Level Straumann implant (3.3 RN) placed with simultaneous contour augmentation. UR1 and UR2 treated endodontically.

Excellent stability of Pink aesthetics after 12 years - clinically and radiographically!

2011 - 34y old female with coronal fracture in UL1. Tissue Level Straumann implant (4.1TE) was placed with simultaenous GBR with particulate bone graft and collagen membrane (Geistlich BioOss & BioGide).

An ideal Pink & White aesthetics were achieved in this case as illustrated in clinical and radiographic images.

DAY 26

2013 - 45y old male with failing endodontic treatment UR1 (previous history of apical surgery). At the time of presentation, UR1 had been extracted by the referring dentist and an apical epithelial fistula was present. The case was complicated by interdental bone loss in adjacent teeth with resultant recession of papillae. The case falls in the high risk category based on the ITI Aesthetic Risk Assessment.

Porcine Collagen Matrix (Geistlich Mucograft) was used as a soft tissue matrix to repair the fistula. Six weeks later the surgical site reveals the extensive underlying bone defect in the implant site. Tissue Level Straumann implant (3.3 RN) was placed in an ideal 3-dimensional position for a screw-retained crown with a sandwich GBR (palatal and labial grafting).

Despite all the challenges, an acceptable Pink aesthetics were achieved. While the labial and palatal bone defects were successfully regenerated, the deficient papillae demonstrate the limitations of achieving ideal aesthetic result when pre-op interdental bone has resorbed.

2013 - 47y old female who presented with a root fracture requiring extraction of UL1. Tissue Level Straumann implant (4.1 RN) was placed using a Type 2 placement protocol and simultaneous GBR.
