Happy Ganesh Chaturthi! ✨

Today marks the start of a ten-day celebration in honour of Lord Ganesh – remover of obstacles and giver of fortune. In Bombay, idols of Ganesh-ji are being welcomed into every neighbourhood and almost every home.

Outside, the city is a sea of celebration. Processions fill the streets with music, dance, drums, chanting and food. Bombay continues to swell with hopes for a prosperous future, until finally, the idol is immersed in a body of water.

You’ll find Lord Ganesh sitting at the entrance of every Dishoom, watching over us and keeping us in good stead. On this very happy day may Ganesh remove all the obstacles that stand in your path and bring you good luck and prosperity. ✨

Wow! What a time we’ve had over in NYC with our friends at 🗽
Nearly 1000 portions of Kejriwal later, over 600 plates of The Big Bombay, and literally 1000s of cups of chai... we’ve had a blast. ✨

A huge, heartfelt thanks to every single one of you who has come to see us, we truly loved meeting you. And to our unbelievable teams - you are total rockstars! 💫

To mark this unforgettable pop-up, we’re taking our Meal For A Meal commitment across the pond. We’ve served over 6000 breakfasts over the last two weeks which means we’ll be donating over 6000 meals to the incredible campaign, which aims to end childhood hunger in the U.S. ♥️ Huge and heartfelt thanks to you all for making this possible.

In honour of Navroz, all are warmly invited to savour a cooling special-treat: the Kulfi Falooda. Said to originate in ancient Persia, the Kulfi Falooda is sweet, most extravagant and fun. Here, a glass is layered full with cardamom cream, rice noodles, rose syrup, fruit jelly and sweet basil seeds – topped with Malai Kulfi and crushed nuts.

Apparently, Kyani & Co. first dreamt up this unusual dessert-drink combination and the ‘what-is-it-really’ debate is still ongoing! Dear patron – your opinion is solicited. Pop into any café between 12th—25th August to savour the special-treat and find out.

It’s early morning. The sun has kissed the sky golden-orange. A gentle stretch and leisurely stroll has led you to Gansevoort Street. Admire the sun-drenched brick, the arcs of shade, under which brasserie Pastis is nestled.

This August, we’re teaming up with our friends Pastis in New York City to bring the best of Dishoom breakfast (and tipples) across the Atlantic between 19th - 30th August. Mark your calendars and sign up for more info below
https://www.dishoom.com/newsletter/

Parsi Omelette, Breakfast Naan Rolls, Akuri and House Granola are sure to invigorate your morning. And, most-cherished tipples: the Bloody Gosh Mary and Summerhouse Negroni (among others), served not just for breakfast, but all-day.

We truly can't wait 🗽🍳✨

Happy Vaisakhi to all celebrating! May the day bring you and your families heartfelt joy and blessings.🌼

On this day many Sikh families don their finest and head to the Gurudwara for Paath, a sacred prayer ritual followed by langar (communal feasting) which sees lavish spreads of Sarson ka Saag, Chole Puri or Black Daal. Not forgetting to round off the festivities with some Bhangra 🎊

Celebrations will be running through our cafés by way of Sarson ka Saag - a traditional Punjab staple. Slow-cooked mustard leaves and spinach, tempered with ghee, cumin, green chillies, garlic, and onions. Finished with a dollop of melting butter and served beside makki (maize) ki rotis, tamarind-onion chutney, and jaggery.

Vaisakhi di lakh lakh vadhaiyan! 💫

10/04/2024

✨🌙 Eid Mubarak, dearest friends! 🌙 💫
May the day be filled with much love, joy and jubilation as you prepare for the festivities ahead. Be it dressing in finest attire readying for communal morning prayers at Mosque or simply eagerly awaiting a day of family feasting.

All our cafés will be serving up a celebratory Eid special of Lamb Raan Biryani to mark the occasion - a firm favourite for any Eid table centrepiece. Succulent leg of lamb, prepared in the traditional raan style skillfully layered with fragrant rice under a buttery puff pastry lid. Served with a rich raan gravy, pomegranate raita and fresh onion salad. A must-try until 21st April.

✨Happiness to you all ✨

Bombay’s love affair with Bun Maska Chai is timeless. In this there is no denying. That said, there’s no harm in a little variation from time to time. 😉

Enter Bun Maska Choc - soft bun, salty butter, dipped in comfy-tasty Hot Chocolate. A special treat for your little ones.

Swing by any Dishoom on a weekday this month before 5pm and kids can enjoy Bun Maska with a Hot Chocolate on us. Just ask your server. 🍫

22/03/2024

With the Spring festival of Holi just around the corner we have a wonderful new special gracing our menus - Misal Pau.

Available until March 31st, it's a Bombay street-food classic of sprouted lentils soaked in a smoky-spicy gravy of charred onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and chilli. Served with pau, crisp red onions, Bombay Mix and lime.

A dish to sustain the high jinx of Holi, where Bombayites pelt one another with coloured gulal powders – joyous chaos.

20/03/2024

Warmest Navroz wishes to you all! ✨

Join us to mark this ancient new year celebration welcoming in spring’s arrival and the vernal equinox with a most celebratory dessert - Coconut Caramel Custard - a Parsi-Parisian confection made of egg custard, caramelised with jaggery, and sprinkled with cracked coconut chikki inspired by the great Britannia & Co's famed dessert.

This wibbling delight is available in all cafés until March 31st.

No food-lover’s trip to Bombay is complete without a visit to Mohammed Ali Road. This bustling locale is brimful of modest (but renowned) establishments selling delicacies of all kinds: with juicy kebabs, flavoursome stews and tandoori dishes among them.

During the holy month of Ramadan, the atmosphere livens even more - during iftar and well into the night. To connect your tastebuds to this historic street (and to coincide with Ramadan this year), our chef-wallas have added four delectable specials: Baida Roti, Galawati Kabab, Nalli Nihari and Mawa Jalebi. Available at our Birmingham café until 18th April.

And, rather serendipitously, catch our co-founder Kavi give .rosenthal of ‘Somebody Feed Phil’ a whistle-stop tour of the flavourful foodie strip - see the ‘Mumbai’ episode on Netflix now and prepare to feel extremely hungry.

“Some of you are aware that this is my annual habit – to brood in a mostly sober fug of weariness as I try to get the measure of the year gone by. ’23 felt so long, and yet passed by in a blink. I wonder, how can both things be true? My head is often a tangled up sort of place. If this bar-side reflecting ritual of mine goes well, it could untangle things a bit (even if only temporarily).”

Our Co-founder, Shamil, shares his thoughts and reflections on the year gone by via the link below.

Bombay’s special love for seafood inspired our much-loved lunchtime favorite, which has sailed back into our Canary Wharf café for the month.

The Lobster Roll sees lobster claw meat marinated in a rich butter, garlic, lime and chilli dressing, then piled high into homemade pau with green chutney mayo, fried onions and fresh herbs. Pour on chilli garlic butter whilst crunching on accompanying café crisps until 4th February.

'I’m very proud to say that Dishoom Battersea - which looks right up at the beautiful power station - is now officially open!

You might know that each time we open a restaurant, we write a story deeply rooted in Bombay. The story informs all aspects of the restaurant’s design. This time we did the story as a comic (or at least the beginning of it).

I grew up reading all the comics I could get my hands on, from Amar Chitra Katha, telling stories of Indian history and mythology – to Archie, Tintin, Asterix and DC, Marvel and Calvin & Hobbes. I hoard most of the originals and I still devour graphic novels today. So it was inevitable that we would one day tell a café story in comic form.

In Battersea, our story is of Choti Dishoom, a girl who lives in Bombay in 1953 and is transported to an imagined 2023, where she discovers she has superpowers. (It helps that I have three daughters of about her age.) The awesome illustrator Shazleen Khan helped us bring this to life.

For a Londoner, Battersea is a pretty exciting place to be opening. My father used to love telling me about the importance of the power station. I always thought that this place was where the future was imagined. Our stories (like immigrants perhaps) are actually rooted twice; once in Bombay and once here in London. When we searched we found that Bombay had remarkable visionary futurists and dreamers who tried to imagine what was coming.

So, we decided to connect the dots. And with that, Dishoom Battersea’s retro-futurist design took shape – taking inspiration from both the power station and Bombay futurists from the mid-20th century.

And in the meantime you can read about the adventures of Choti Dishoom here!'

It's beyond thrilling to begin welcoming you through the doors of Dishoom Battersea – our retro-futurist-inspired café. Our soft launch will run until 2.30pm on 5th December, and there’s 50% off all food waiting to be enjoyed.

Bombay, like Battersea, has hosted the dreams of an imagined future. Through the decor and across the walls, you will find tributes to the future-seekers. The founding myth that sits behind the design of Dishoom Battersea is that of Choti Dishoom - a young girl who lives in Bombay in 1953 and is transported (with the help of magical dice) to an imagined 2023, where she discovers she has superpowers.

Friends, a polite notice of our new opening hours: from today, guests are very welcome to order food until 9:30pm and tipples until 9:45pm, and we’ll need to close our doors at 10pm sharp.

Looking ahead, from Monday we're very pleased to introduce an updated menu with new and returning plates of the heartiest Bombay comfort food (more on those coming soon), as well as a first-class new wine list.

Reservations remain open for groups of up to six guests (observing local restrictions on household meet-ups, of course) and we absolutely look forward to welcoming you at your leisure.

01/07/2020

After a strange and uncertain few months, we’re extremely happy to be firing up the stoves, brewing large pots of chai and warming up our welcomes so we can open our doors to you all on Friday, July 10th!

As part of our measures to keep everyone safe during the time of coronavirus, we are now taking reservations for any size of group up to a maximum of 6 at any time of day. Walk-ins will always be welcome, but booking is particularly recommended for busy times such as evenings and weekends. Book now for July: https://bit.ly/3eQNgXE

We have worked closely with leading safety specialists, and with their guidance created comprehensive safety standards to make sure our restaurants have the highest standards of health and safety for this time. More on these measures is available here: dishoom.com/safety/

After these months of hibernation, we must confess to being a touch nervous as we come out blinking in the sunlight. We’re hoping that our business still makes sense in the time of coronavirus.

More than anything, though, we’ve missed the restaurants full of you, our guests. We’ve missed our team, the lights that glow golden, and the music and the bustle and the fragrance of freshly brewed chai.

We’ll be here with big smiles whenever you feel ready to return and we can’t wait to welcome you back.

With much love,
Shamil, Kavi and the Dishoom team.

23/03/2020

Last week’s decision to close the restaurants to dining guests was difficult and deeply sad, for all of us. Since then, we've been absolutely blown away by the love, generosity and support you have shown to our team. From spreading the word of our burgeoning takeaway and delivery service, to offering to support us in any way possible, you all have been so big-hearted towards us. We won't forget it.

But, after a whirlwind weekend satisfying your Dishoom needs from afar, things have changed again. Today we looked at the world around us and at our wonderful team, and felt strongly that we needed to do more. So, as of now, we have halted all collection and delivery from our restaurants, so we can send our team home to stay safe and well with their loved ones. A socially distanced Dishoom family - but still a family nonetheless.

While the restaurants are closed and takeaway is off the table (so to speak), we offer solace in our cookery book, which is most certainly still available to order. May it bring Dishoom, joy and plenty of Daal to your home. From all of us, with love.
