Identified! We are grateful to for identifying the ‘tomb at Lucca’ in this Ruskin drawing. It’s s shield from the Guidiccioni tomb in the church of San Frediano, Lucca - see the second image for a photo courtesy of Martin. Sadly the shield has lost some of its detail in the last 150 years. £1,800 in our selling exhibition of works by John Ruskin which runs until 3rd May
Temporary hang in the gallery of European views before our Ruskin show featuring views of Venice, Rome, Bologna, Rouen, Paris, Dresden, Prague, Potsdam, Lake Thun, Oporto, Seville and others by Prout, Callow, Cromek, Boys, Lewis, Lear, Wyld, Brabazon, Cox, Danby and Holland

Beautiful last day in New York
One of my favourite things in our New York exhibition is this rare album of 41 watercolours by Sir Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842) drawn on a journey in France and Russia each signed with initials and dated between 1814 and 1816. Ker Porter was an English artist, writer and diplomat who was invited to Russia by Tsar Alexander I to decorate the Admiralty in St Petersburg. He fell in love with the country and a Russian princess whom he married. In 1825 he was appointed British Consul to Venezuela where ge remained for 15 years. He is buried in St Petersburg where he died when visiting his daughter. On view in New York as part of until Saturday
A rare view of Manchester dating from circa 1830 by Paul Sandby Munn (1773-1845), priced at £1,800. It is taken from Kersal Moor with the river Irwell in the foreground, from our current exhibition which closes on Friday
Our exhibition ‘One Hundred Drawings and Watercolours’ continues until Friday 15th December. Here is ‘A Dog chasing a Snipe’ by Newton Fielding (1799-1856), signed and dated 1839
Our winter exhibition ‘One Hundred Drawings and Watercolours’ opens tonight- here are two London Thames views by John Wilson Carmichael (1799-1868)
Our winter exhibition catalogue is now online- see link in bio. The exhibition opens on Tuesday 28th November and continues until Friday 15th December- here’s a detail of no 18 by Robert Hills
Stand by for new joint catalogue with and - out next week
Another favourite from our forthcoming exhibition - a study of trees by another Bristol artist Charles Branwhite (1817-1880)
What do you call a wall of large watercolours by David Cox? I don’t know but here one is…. All late works dating from 1840 onwards and mostly Welsh
One of my favourite amateur artists is the Bristol School’s Rev John Eagles (1783-1855). This double sketchbook sheet is dated 1812 and is probably a view taken in Leigh Woods near Bristol. It is included in our winter exhibition ‘One Hundred Drawings and Water-colours’ which opens on the 27th November
Working on our winter catalogue- which will include this portrait drawing of the Norwich School artist Miles Edmund Cotman (1810-1858), the son of John Sell Cotman, drawn by his friend Joseph Geldart (1808-1882)
First visit for 35 years and just as fascinating as I remember
Other highlights include brilliantly eccentric Holman Hunt and Maclise, Sweerts, Matisse…
Finally made it to and well worth the visit with some fantastic pictures - thank you for being so generous with your time
Great to briefly be back in New York for the opening of our exhibition ‘Three Centuries of British Art’ joint with and . It continues until mid December
In the Amis collection since 1956 is this luminous watercolour by John Robert Cozens (1752-1797) of the mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, Rome. Our loan exhibition of the Amis Bequest from Eton College closes tomorrow
Our loan exhibition of watercolours from the Amis Bequest to Eton College closes on Wednesday. I will post a few of my favourites in the next day or two. I sold this view on the river Dee near Wynnstay by Peter de Wint in 1999, during my Sotheby’s days, and have always loved it
