I fancied something sweet today so I popped into a local bakery and picked up a raspberry and passion fruit brioche bun (posh, ain’t I!)
I was expecting this to be soft, fruity, sweet, zingy and delicious, but when I took my first bite it tasted dry and salty, and all I could taste was yeast. What I saw on the outside actually had nothing to do with what I tasted on the inside. Yuk! But what does that have to do with dog training? Well…quite often I meet people who have chosen a dog just by the way the dog looks. On the outside. They like a certain flavour of dog - visually. They have this idea of what their life with their dream dog will be like - the only problem being that the dog may have other things in mind! Their breed, personality or unique genetic makeup may not at all be what you have been looking for - and may well be very, very different from the “dream dog” you had in mind. However - to me pretty much every dog can be someone’s dream dog. Rather than just focussing on what YOU want from your dog, find out what THEiR needs and desires are. You might be surprised. To find out what is really going on when your dog is home alone, filming them is crucial.
It is only by watching a dog’s behaviour and body language, that we are truly able to differentiate a problem that may require a different training plan from a full, structured Separation Anxiety Protocol. Not every dog that exhibits unwanted behaviours during home alone time necessarily has Separation Anxiety. If in doubt, reach out to a professional. True Separation Anxiety is a very serious panic condition, similar to a phobia in humans and requires expert guidance. The dog training market is now being flooded with endless free videos on social media platforms such as Tik Tok - often posted by people with NO qualifications or education, giving out terrible and potentially dangerous advice. If you have a dog and you love that dog, and need help with training or behaviour, please make sure that your trainer has attended some courses and is a member of some reputable organisations. A good and caring trainer will personalise a training programme for you and your dog, taking many different factors into consideration, rather than offering you a “one size fits all approach.” You wouldn’t take your child to a wannabe doctor or psychologist with no qualifications who is ranting on Tik Tok, so please don’t go down that route with your dog. For many Separation Anxiety dog parents, their dog’s Separation Anxiety seems to be a big taboo.

They don’t openly talk about it.

They fear to be judged by other dog owners.

They are worried to be pressured into incorrect advice that they KNOW will only make their dog’s Separation Anxiety worse.

They are worried to be perceived as failures by other dog owners and as “weak” or “too soft on their dogs.”

If this sounds like you, I would really encourage you to openly talk about the problem - there are people who are going through the exact same things and will understand, and together we are stronger.

There is no shame in having a “problem dog” - and if you are embarking on a Separation Anxiety training plan, then in my opinion you are a HERO.

Don’t suffer in silence

Having a Dog with Separation Anxiety can be a very lonely place

You might be unable to socialise with your friends because you cannot leave your dog

You might think that you are a bad dog parent and have failed to train your dog correctly

You might feel guilty, sad, angry, desperate, devastated…the list goes on

You might spend an absolute fortune on dog sitters and doggy daycare

The thing is - a lot of other people are in the same situation too

They don’t always talk about it because they are afraid to be judged by other dog owners or by friends and family

Whilst there are no guarantees in behaviour modification and a small percentage of dogs never overcome Separation Anxiety, in most cases it is SO treatable. So my advice is to seek help now and ensure that you choose a qualified SA Pro Trainer ( I am one 😉 ) or a CSAT trainer and life could look a WHOLE lot better in 6-12 months.
If in doubt, there are some great books by Julie Naismith and Malena deMartini.

Overcoming Separation Anxiety is by no means a quick fix, but in most cases, it can be done.

Was it easy? No.

I will be launching my Separation Anxiety Canine Coffee Club in October ☕️❤️🐾

This is a monthly 1 hour Group coaching session via Zoom, starting on Monday the 24th of October at 7:30 pm

There will be a 30 minute presentation from myself on different aspects of living with a Separation Anxiety dog - you will learn something new every month ( even if you have been coaching with me for a few months already) and this will also help you to stay on track and help you to stay motivated to keep pushing forward.

There will be a Whatsapp group where you can share cute pictures of your dogs and also success stories, and make new friends with other people and doggies who are in a similar situation and exchange experiences ❤️🐕🐾💗🐶

The cost will be £20 per month, you can either pay as you go every month, or you can commit to longer - if you commit and pay upfront for 3 months, you will be given a 10% discount making it £54 for the 3 month membership, and if you commit and pay upfront for 6 months you will be given a 20% discount making it £96 for the 6 month membership.

If you have fallen off the bandwagon and haven’t trained for a while, this is also a great opportunity to renew your enthusiasm for home alone training and get inspired by what others have achieved 🐶🐶

Having a dog with Separation Anxiety can be a lonely place, and I want this to be a positive and uplifting community where we exchange tips and experiences and cheer each other on.
