Navigating Trauma on Your Fertility Journey ๐ŸŒธ

Trying to have a baby while dealing with trauma can feel like you're walking through a minefield. It's tough, right?

Trauma comes in all shapes and sizes, but it tends to mess with us in the same way.

Whether it's a big trauma or a little one, it can lead to complex mental health issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety, all of which can make getting pregnant a bit trickier.

The stuff that happened when you were a kid? It can still have a grip on you, making fertility struggles even harder to handle. When bad things happen, our bodies react to keep us safe, but sometimes these reactions stick around, even when the danger is long gone. This just adds more stress to the whole baby-making process.

Here are some ways our bodies react:

Freeze: Your brain hits the pause button, making your senses go into overdrive to size up the situation.

Flight: Your muscles get ready to bolt, just in case you need to make a quick getaway.

Fight: Your heart starts racing and you breathe faster, gearing up to face whatever's coming at you.

Fright: Fear takes the wheel, leaving you feeling helpless and foggy-headed.

Flag: Your body's systems begin to power down, numbing your emotions as a way to cope.

Faint: In extreme cases, your body might just shut down completely and make you faint.

Recognising how trauma plays tricks on us is the first step towards feeling better.

๐ŸŒธ Today, on World Preeclampsia Day, we shine a light on a condition that affects 5-10% of all pregnancies worldwide: hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs). These include preeclampsia, eclampsia, and gestational hypertension.

๐Ÿคฐ Preeclampsia, in particular, is characterised by a rapid rise in blood pressure, potentially leading to seizures, strokes, and organ failure for both mother and baby. It's a leading cause of maternal and infant death globally, with a staggering 76,000 women and 500,000 babies losing their lives each year.

๐Ÿ’” Unfortunately, the burden of HDPs falls disproportionately on low- and middle-income countries, where the majority of these tragic deaths occur. Shockingly, even in the United States, maternal mortality rates are rising, with HDPs playing a significant role in maternal and infant illness and death.

โš ๏ธ Alarmingly, Black women in the US experience severe maternal morbidity events at a rate 2.1 times higher than white women, highlighting the urgent need for equitable access to maternal healthcare and support.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ As we observe World Preeclampsia Day, let's not only raise awareness about this silent killer but also advocate for better maternal healthcare policies, increased research funding, and improved access to care for all expectant mothers, regardless of their background.

โฑ๏ธ Did you know? In some places, women's GP appointments are shorter than the time it takes to make a cup of tea! Yes, you heard that right. In India, appointments have been as short as 48 seconds! ๐Ÿ™€

Here in the UK, despite a significant increase of 4 seconds (enough time for a little cough), the average appointment length remains just 9 minutes and 22 seconds. And let's not forget the weeks it can take to get an appointment in the first place!

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ Shorter visits mean less time for important discussions, leaving women feeling like they're on a conveyor belt rather than receiving the support they need, especially for issues like hormonal imbalances and fertility.

Others may offer advice based on their own experiences or observations, without fully understanding the complexities involved. It's all too common to hear judgments about behaviours, such as being the wrong weight, or too old, as supposed explanations behind infertility.

This unwanted advice often stems from a desire to control or project insecurities onto others, with individuals feeling entitled to share information without being asked.

However, the fertility journey is deeply personal, and those navigating it are more than capable of finding their own support and resources to navigate their path with confidence and understanding.
