Very quickly the Dads realised that the "Lads" were beginning to outshine the"Dads" on the field of play. As Steve Austin famously said at the time "these kids need to be kept in their place and that is in the shadow of their elders and betters"
So it came to pass "Macclesfield Occasionals" as a cricketing elite arrived on the scene with a mighty thwack followed by the sound of broken glass! Y

es our first match went brillianty well enjoyed by all with exception of the furious bloke who's window we managed to break. This single incident is well remembered as in the subsequent 19 years we've rarely got near the boundary let alone breaking windows of adjacent properties. The following two years was the transistion period from Dads and Lads to Macclesfield Occasionals. During that period a number of enthusiastic Kellogg Sales Department colleagues were enlisted to help the team out when achieving a full eleven was a bit like Jonti being selected to open the bowling for England at Lords - a target for sure but a tough goal to achieve! During the early years our matches were away fixtures only. But our nomadic travels finally ended when we found a home at Langley Cricket Club. A beautiful little ground right in the heart of some wonderful Cheshire countryside. Playing cricket on a lovely summers evening @ Langley and then retreating to The Church House Pub to discuss and decide who's fault it was that we had lost made for some brilliantly funny Wednesday evenings. But Langley wasn't to last, we had to move on and in 1995 we de-camped to Kerridge Cricket Club. What a move - Clubhouse with a BAR - The Lord Clyde PH in walking distance and a magnificent little country cricket ground set against the backdrop of Kerridge Ridge. From a base of four or five matches in 1980 we now schedule a full season fixture list of 22 matches. The bulk of our matches are still played on Wednesday evening and are Twenty / 20 format. Our aim is fun cricket thus enabling everyone to participate i.e with exception of the custodian of the gloves the other ten players bowl two overs each and batsmen retire on reaching 25 runs. The LBW rule is waived mainly because no-one (with the possible exception of "Fred Slater") understands it! Which brings me on to Umpiring? - mmmm - Lets put it this way nothing much has changed since 1990 - we lacked a universal understanding of the rules then and progress has been slow in the intervening years. But does it really matter ?....Playing the game with your pals against like minded opponents and having a pint and a laugh afterwards is much more important. I guess that's our philosophy in a nutshell.
