Reducing the hospitality sector’s carbon footprint - nothing goes to waste

CleanConscience is a unique charity that assists UK hotels, restaurants, pubs, and offices to deal with challenging waste streams, like redundant or surplus office furniture, mattresses, linen, bedding, curtains, furniture, mirrors, framed pictures, small electrical equipment, etc. Items that are salvaged are donated to the other charities we support, or offered back to the public in exchange for

Welcoming The BoTree to the CleanConscience soap & toiletry recycling programme

05/10/2023

It’s not just the big decant and soft strip jobs we do, we also assist when hotels are swapping over their sofa beds, mattresses, bedding and linen.

Here’s the team at Park Plaza London Waterloo, assisting with the swap of their old sofa beds for new ones 💪💪💪

The old sofa beds will all get a new lease of life, helping families that live in poverty.

This time we packed a 40 foot articulated lorry, destined for Lithuania 🇱🇹

A group of volunteer firefighters, from a small village called Viešvilė, will benefit from the washing machine and tumble dryer, to enable them to wash their uniforms on site, rather than taking it home 🫶🫶🫶

FOUR down ONE to GO 🚛

Now 27 days into the decant and soft strip and our third and fourth shipping containers also went to Sierra Leone 🇸🇱

The third one was packed on the 2nd of September and will benefit the Kori Women's Development Project, and the fourth one was packed on the 9th of September and will benefit Buildaid Norge.

Ole & Ingfrid are already looking forward to the container’s arrival, as they will be able to use some of the inventory to finish a school and help restore an orphanage.

We are looking forward to hearing some of the outcomes and to receive plenty of photos.

Thank you Joe & Sarah for joining the dots 💞💞💞

TWO down 💪💪

15 days into the Imperial Hotel decant (clearance) and soft strip we loaded our second container destined for Sierra Leone, this time benefitting our long standing sister charity, the Kori Women's Development Project, based in Taiama, Kori Chiefdom.

I’m time to come, Rose Simbo will report back on all the outcomes achieved from this container, and she has many things planned, so we are looking forward to hearing back from her ♥️

Here’s todays feel good outcome from Team CleanC:

VOLUNTEER ‘LABOURERS’

Yes, the bulk of our team on this project are volunteers - residents from the ‘dreaded’ Holiday Inn Maidenhead/Windsor.

For those that didn’t know, asylum seekers are prevented by bureaucracy from being able to work to provide for themselves and their families, so I can’t pay them for this backbreaking job 🥹

These are proud husbands & wives, mothers & fathers, that have taken the big risk to leave their countries of birth to seek a better life for themselves and for their children - something that I as an immigrant did myself 25 years ago but I was lucky, I had ancestry through my maternal line, so my journey was smooth 😌

It is not an easy decision to leave your country of birth, but if the government is corrupt or the police or military is looking for you, because you belong to an opposition political party (which is illegal in many countries) and you have taken part in protests (again illegal), and given the opportunity to leave, then YOU would also get on a boat or, if you’re one of the lucky ones, on an aeroplane 😌

What CleanConscience is offering them, is the following (we call them benefits, but NOT as you know them, we are NOT the government, we ARE CleanConscience 😌):

1. Dignity and pride
2. Something to get out of bed for
3. Aches and pains in return for high spirits and smiling faces (look how beautiful they are!)
4. Stories to tell their families and friends about the ‘TREASURES’ that they find in the hotel, and bring to me for ALL of us to get excited about
5. Learning at least ONE English word per day, with NUMPTY being the latest one 🤣🤣🤣
6. Two square meals with all the snacks and drinks they can fit in during their short breaks
7. One family meal on a Friday or Saturday, to take back to the hotel to spoil their families with
8. A character reference from CleanC to strengthen their case with the Home Office

Our Story

CleanConscience is a unique charity that has worked alongside London hotels and toiletry manufacturers since 2015 to ensure that the maximum amount of partially used hotel soap and toiletries are recovered, re-purposed and redistributed to those who need it most in the South East of England, Greater London, and in Sierra Leone.

The routine operation is formed of two main steps:

  • Hotels are provided with green empty recycling crates, which their housekeepers use when cleaning rooms. On a three weekly basis they carry out a collection round for the soaps and other toiletries using a hire vehicle, to collect the filled recycling crates, and supply clean empty crates. They also collect any other end-of-life items (e.g. towels & linen) that hotels might choose to donate. Hotels pay a programme fee in the sum of £1 per room per month for this service.

  • Volunteers reprocess the toiletries and distribute the materials to partner charities such as foodbanks, homeless shelters, asylum support and the Sierra Leone project.
