Yes people!
It’s the new year which means a new you. Right?

Getting back in the gym? Started running again? Maybe you just want to move abit more? whatever it is we all know how hard it can be to get back to it and stay injury free.

I’ve got 5 simple tips to keep you injury free!

1. DONT RUSH! Know your limits, start easy and gradual increase your training. You shouldn’t run before you’ve walked. Start walking before you run. Same with weights, use lighter weights than you previously used, and gradually increase them

2. REST!! Make sure you get in your rest and recovery, better sleeping patterns, rest days every 3 days or so. And try some new stuff, meditation, sauna, cold shower/baths.

3. Create a sustainable schedule. Fit training around you, not you around training. Consistency is key, and having a plan will help you stay on track.

4. Better nutrition, improving your eating has many benefits, better immune systems, better energy levels, better gut health, it is also vital muscle recovery and keeping you from getting the winter colds so you can keep training!

5. And finally GET FIXED NOW! Any aches, pain or niggles you’re feeling now will only get worse if you don’t manage them correctly with the appropriate treatment method which can lead them to be more damaging later on.

It’s very common for injuries to creep in as you’re finally getting into the swing of things. Simple changes can stop this.

Let’s have a chat about rest.

Whenever I work a patient or athlete I never use the word rest. I use de-load or reduce.
Too often people go to their local GP or self medicate themselves and decide that rest is best and the pain will go in time.

This is a massive misconception, rest doesn’t help, most of the time.
Let’s use tendinopathy as an example, this is tendon pain or pathology caused by an over load to the tendon structure,and mostly happens when there is a change in load or activity (running 5k to running uphil), when you rest, there is no load for the tendon to tolerate which will result in deconditioning of that tissue and further reduce the tolerance the tendon can be loaded with.

This then creates a viscous cycle of returning back when the pain has subsided and without proper healing will be a recurring problem even when going back to the usual activity which wouldn’t normally cause a problem.

Rest is all about being relative, not stopping completely, there’s a vast amount of activities or exercises you can do with injuries without stressing the damaged structures.

ISOMETRICs are great for this. It helps maintain some tolerance to load and maintain muscles or tissue strength plus CNS and vascular sides to helping the healing processes of tissues.

Yes yes people

One question I get pretty much daily is, What is a sports rehabilitator? What’s the difference between rehab and physio?

So although sports rehab and physio share the same space there are lots of differences that separate them.

Take the image below from a blog. This demonstrates the clear difference between the two and how a Sports rehabilitator has a crossover with S&C especially when it comes to preventing future injuries

Sports rehab is solely focused on MSK related injuries where as a physio has 4 disciplines within its scope of practice. We use the same manual therapy technique, but have a wider spectrum on the exercise selection we use within the rehabilitation stages of rehab.

It’s quite common to confuse the two as they are similar but SR isn’t just for the injured, we also work with patient and athletes to improve performance, similarly to a S&C coach and relate the movements of the sports to the end stages of rehab to produce a more robust and better athlete than before the injury.
