There’s an article online at the moment that is promoting the idea of the ‘best’ formula milk for your baby. It’s basically an advertising piece and includes some of the most expensive formulas suggesting they are better for your baby.
I’m not going to link to it (and am 😵💫 it’s been published under advertising laws) but wanted to remind anyone who is worried that they can’t afford the ‘best’ formula for their baby or is feeling pressure to afford it, that there’s simply no evidence that more expensive milks are better for your baby.
All infant formulas suitable from 0 - 12 months are nutritionally equivalent and there’s no evidence that any provide better nutrition or outcomes compared to the others. They are all regulated to have very similar ingredients and the ones on sale for £9 (or whatever the lowest price is this week) will support your baby in the same way that the ones double the price will.
When you look at the ingredients list of different priced formulas they are very similar. The companies openly admit in published research to targeting different worries in their advertising of their products ie making parents think that some milks are more scientific and developed than others even though they know that this isn’t true.
Please buy whatever milk suits your budget, is most most easily available or even suits your kitchen colour scheme - which is more relevant than any advertising claims are!

True story: my new grandson was born unexpectedly very sick and spent the first week of his life in intensive care unable to be fed by his Mummy.
I was so privileged to be there to support my daughter, promoting hand expressing round the clock initially. It took 4 days for her to be able to express more than a ml at a time due to the stress, her poor health and separation from her very poorly baby. By day 4 the NICU staff started tube feeding those drops to baby down a nasogastric tube and requested more from Mum. I nearly panicked but I knew she could do it. We bought one of those pumps that sat inside the bra so she could be hands free to touch her baby and ignore the mechanics.
The pressure was enormous for her to give the baby to have a dummy ‘to self soothe’ and allow formula top ups. He did not need either and I was so proud of my educated daughter for not submitting to NNU practices which undermine breastfeeding.
We worked all day and she was eventually getting 30 mls at a time and just able to meet his needs.
What was exasperating was the regime of 3 hourly feeding once he was able. We knew he should be skin on skin and offered the breast responsively and the 3 hourly tube feeds meant he wasn’t waking to be fed by Mummy.
Thankfully he has made a remarkable recovery and despite a significant tongue tie took to breast feeding. The latch was uncomfortable and suboptimal but we knew that was a temporary glitch.
I am so proud of my daughter having faith in process as he has been exclusively been given his Mummy’s milk. This was so important for my daughter to be able to do as she didn’t see him until he was 4 hours old and didn’t get a cuddle until 5 days old.
Fast forward to day 10 and he feeding like a dream following his tongue tie release.
I am a super proud Grandma not least because my Grandson appears to have come through this unscathed but, God willing, my daughter will be able to recover mentally from the trauma of events.
It is early days but I will ensure she gets time to debrief and enjoy her baby. This shows the value of evidenced based advice and support right from the beginning.
PS the consultant in this very central London level 3 NICU did not believe/ support tongue tie release 🤦🏼♀️.

I worked in the NHS until 2015 , since qualifying as a nurse in 1989 and then as a midwife in 1992. I have specialised in infant feeding due to my passion for supporting mothers who wish to breast feed. Like most people who have a keen interest I had feeding problems which subsequently led me on a pathway to where I am today, supporting mothers . I have been in private practice since 2010.
In 1993 I began my family and I have two lovely daughters. I was able to breast feed the first daughter without any concerns until she self weaned.
Sadly, my second daughter was unable to breast feed and, reluctantly, I moved on to artificial milk for her. Without in depth knowledge and experience, I was unable to identify why she struggled, and blamed myself for not being able to feed her.
When I discovered information about Tongue Ties in 2007 it was my 'light bulb' moment and the path was set for me to acquire training, as an IBCLC, and experience and competency in frenulotomies (division of the Tongue tie) 2010.
You may verify my professional qualification and fitness to practice on the NMC register by entering my full name, Suzanne Liza Barber.
