I can share this commission now that it’s been given to the recipient for her birthday and I’m glad to report she loves it!

I always admire this cottage by the sea when passing by.

Skaill is a beautiful bay in Sandwick, Orkney and is also home to the amazing Neolithic village of Skara Brae

Long before Stonehenge or even the Egyptian pyramids were built, Skara Brae was a thriving village. It’s the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Western Europe and is over 5000 years old! 😯

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Karen, the face behind Homestead.

I started my wee business 10 years ago focusing on reupholstery.

Fast forward a decade (holy moly time flies) and now it’s all about footstools and wall hangings!

I wonder what the next 10 years will bring?

It’s rainy here in Mirfield and I have the choice of cleaning the house or doing some work. I love making hangers so it was an easy decision 🥰

I have several commissions and my lovely competition winner’s hanger to make in the coming weeks. Then hopefully I’ll get some time to make a few pieces for my next release. My head is full of so many ideas. Don’t forget I still make footstools too.

I hate mentioning that special day in December when you give your loved ones a gift but it’ll be here before we know it. 100 days to be precise 😮

This wall hanging was commissioned for a lovely Mum who is celebrating a special birthday.

If you look closely there’s even a tiny red phone box outside of their house.
I used a peedie bit of artistic license to add these elements in but i think it looks great!

Pretty in pink 💕

Hey folks! Ooh I love this Hometsead Footstool finished in pink/beige herringbone Harris tweed. The brief was pink but neutral and I don’t think that I could have found a better fabric.

Looking out of my workroom window I can see my hydrangeas slowly losing their summer vibrancy but they are still beautiful nonetheless. This tweed reminded me of that. 🌸

The sun is shining today and I hope and pray it lasts until tomorrow as we have a bouncy castle arriving for Erik’s 11th birthday party! He is very excited!

I’m slowly but surely catching up with orders placed over the summer. Bear with me and I’ll be in touch soon! I really don’t mind if you remind me either.

Well done to everyone who made it through the holidays. It has really flown by. We had some highs and some lows but overall it’s been good and we did some fun things.

I squeezed in a visit home to Orkney, camping in N Yorks, a week in Pembrokeshire, a visit from my sister and fam and also my best pal and fam.

It’s not easy coping with our autistic son but somehow we do. Sometimes it’s far fron perfect but who’s life is?

So to any parents or guardians out there with a quiet house .. enjoy the space!

Homestead Hanger 34: Golden hour at Duncansby Stacks

Just a short walk from John o’Groats lies the very impressive Duncansby Stacks.

Three huge sandstone pyramids reach out from the sea to heights over 60m. The tallest is called the Great Stack, and is even higher than the mainland!

I’ve never visited the stacks before and tomorrow I will be only a short distance away as I catch the boat from Gills Bay to Orkney. It’s my first trip up north solo parenting so wish me luck! 😱

This commission is a birthday gift for a lovely Mum from her daughter. Get in touch if you want me to capture a special place in textile art for you!

What a fine day to be celebrating God’s own County of Yorkshire 🥰

I really love my adopted home of Yorkshire. With friendly folk and beautiful scenery it’s not unlike my home country of Scotland.

This Homestead Hanger depicts Castle Hill and Victoria Tower (Almondbury) It’s a great place to go to see far and wide over lovely West Yorkshire. It’s available in my peedie shop too!

Homestead Hanger 33: The Bay o’ Skaill and St Peter’s Kirk

I’m so pleased to share this commission that was a 50th birthday gift for a lovely lady from her life long pal 🥰

Skaill is in the parish of Sandwick in Orkney and looks out on the Atlantic Ocean. At one end you will find the amazing Neolithic village of Skara Brae which is over 5000 years old.

St Peter’s Kirk is situated at the other end of the bay.

It’s a really beautiful place and well worth a visit if you ever make it up to Orkney.

How fabulous does this Homestead footstool finished in burnt orange Harris Tweed look?! I love the contrast with the dark blue wall and light grey chair. It’s a wonderful little pop of colour and a real statement piece!

I have wanted to make this colour combination for a while as I just LOVE this Harris Tweed from the wonderful Margaret at

She uses a beautiful natural palette of colours based on her surroundings and it has such a contemporary feel. The colours are all designed to work together.

This stool has a combination of lichen and mussel ripple stripes. 💚💙

Margaret is now only weaving her own Hebridean Tweed which is just a fabulous as her Harris Tweed.

Spurn Point - Love at the Lighthouse 💕

It was a real pleasure to make Homestead Hanger 32 as a special gift for a milestone birthday.

It’s extra special as this is where the recipient proposed to his wife. She asked for a heart shaped pebble on the beach. How cute! Can you spot it? ❤️

Spurn is a 3 mile long sand spit tidal island at the mouth of the Humber in East Riding, Yorkshire. It is a National Nature Reserve managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

The distinctive lighthouse was build in 1895 and is a listed building.

The wooden groynes help to defend the island against st the power of the North Sea and slow down the movement of the islsnd.

I’ve never visited before but it’s definitely on my list of places to see!

Did you know I spend a surprising amount of time ironing when I make my hangers?! It helps to stop the tweed from going wonky and keeps it flat! 😆

I’m so happy to share with you Homestead Hanger 30: The Brough - is it ebbing or flowing?

This hanger was commissioned for a lovely lady who was celebrating a special birthday! 🎈 I’m glad to report she was delighted with it.

The Brough of Birsay is probably one of the most visited and photographed places in Orkney. Captured by artists in many different styles and media I was lucky enough to grow up seeing it every day from our house. It’s a tidal island and I’ve seen many folk wading back over the causeway, caught out by the incoming tide. It’s a very special place.

I feel like I’ve been really quiet on here recently but I’ve been beavering away behind the scenes with commissions which I can’t wait to share with you soon!

My lovely childhood family home is for sale.

We have made so many happy memories in this wonderful family home with the best views!

My Dad built the house over 50 years ago (plus 2 extensions) and we are the only family to have lived there.

It’s a stone’s throw from the best shore in Orkney (lots of seals, oyster catchers, groatie buckies and so much more), the Earl’s Palace, the Brough of Birsay, Garson (the most amazing natural swimming pool) Palace Stores and Birsay Bay Tearoom , Linkshouse Orkney Arts Residency (The Pier Arts Centre) I could go on .. it’s truly a magical place 🥰
