Harmony Rat Rescue
We are a small home based family ran, non-profit rescue, based in Pegswood, Northumberland. We take in rats who are looking for new homes for various reasons.
We then foster our rats in a home environment until their forever homes are found. We often rehabilitate rats who come in for various behavioral and health reasons. We give our rats the best care available, and try to make sure that is continued in their new homes. We are on hand to offer advice to our rescuers as much as possible. We are completely a non profit organisation and receive no governm
We have 4 lovely boys in currently... please give us a message either here or on Azarath rattery.
These ladies are currently enjoying time being rats and slowly getting used to me... give me a message if you'd like to take them on.
3 bucks looking for a home in Durham at Mimble rats. We also have some does in at the moment, will pop a post up when we can.
I've just shared this on our other page, I'm unsure of it's origin but had to share! Merry Christmas everyone!
I wanted you to all meet Misha. I was asked to take in this lovely old Buck after his cage mate passed away. It is very important in this situation, if you're not planning on keeping rats, to make sure they have company. Even at 27 months old, this old man has plenty in him and adores our buck group! His mum did right by him and got him what he needed to live out a happy life. There has been research done that shows how depressed rats get when they're alone. Even for a couple of days.
On Friday night, we said goodbye to two wonderful does who we all adored very much. Harmony (The Harmony) and Scully were two incredible, loving, engaging and just completely people adoring rats. They passed in comfort and security with each other. They are already very missed by us all.
Updates!
Mortician and Wednesday have been reserved with a lovely lady with plenty of experience to continue to help them along.
Cookie and Remi. These two does are looking for a new home. They're two sweet girls who are like chalk and cheese, Remi is very quiet and sweet and she always wants interaction and reassurance. Cookie is a wild child! She's very sweet natured and lovely, but adventurous and explorative. She can squeak upon handling on occasion, though other than that, she's just a very curious outgoing little girl! Please give us a message if you'd like any information or an application form.
This stunning little cheek (cookie) decided yesterday to release all of her group out of their cage! I was rather shocked to find them all wandering about the room last night. She is quite the clever girl! We've taken extra precautions to their cage now... I may have fallen for how clever she is
We have 2 groups of two girls here.
1. Remi (berkshire) and Cookie (agouti hooded)
2. Mortisha (black hooded) and Wednesday (Berky, who we renamed to remember easier)
Mortisha and Wednesday have been here for a good few weeks now. Mortisha is a little sweetheart, nervous, but an inquisitive young girl. Wednesday is very scared of being touched. She is curious and hopefully with help can come around. For now I've introduced the 2 groups together to help Wednesday out more. Remi is a lovely, calm girl and cookie is a typical crazy, sweet girl.
I'll get some better pictures once intros have come along a bit (they're doing super and seem comfortable with each other quickly)
If anyone has questions about any of the girls we currently have in, please message me! All rats will need an application form to be filled out before rehoming.
Sadly here at Harmony Rat rescue, we will be losing our second air space. This will mean we have to be extremely careful who we bring in. We're hoping to still help out fostering rats here and there. We are also working on making a second air space in a garden shed (though this will take some time). In the meantime, please bear with us. We will of course, make sure support is there as normal for all of the rats who are coming and going here and those who have already been homed out.
We have 4 does (2 pairs) here currently waiting for a home, so please get in touch if you think you could help.
This is Cookie and Remi, these two have been here a few weeks so far. Cookie (agouti hooded) is a very curious, outgoing and excitable young girl, who adores getting into everything... A little squeaky when picked up at times, but nothing bad. Remi (black Berkshire) is a very gentle, steady and sweet little girl who is a wonderful girl! A little unsure, but comes about quickly.
Its vulpix's favourite day!!
Update: Lmao and JK *Reserved*
The lovely Lmao and JK are progressing well! They love free roam and are two very active girls! They're still very wary of being picked up, but once they're with you, they're lovely.
A big thank you to the recent donations! one lot was spent on hammocks, another bought us some bedding, and the recent one will go towards our monthly food bill, so a huge thank you from all of us here! it does make a big difference and means more money can go to vet debts and the like!
Tonights fresh meal (we do a fresh meal every 2-3 days here), consists of mixed lettuce, peppers, Kale, broccoli, carrots, my vegan dinner left overs (which was a pasta and veg mix), and a few yummy treats which are bottom of the bag cereals (this time its a few chocolate wheetos, some granola and Cheerios), I've added small bite fish dog food. Yummy!
This is the lovely Jenny for those who haven't met her. She originally came in as a group of 4. She is now staying with us, as you can tell she's not a healthy Bunny at the moment. We've worked with vets and specialists to try and help her out. She's had everything from baytril, steroids and now tumour reducing medication to help. We're back at the vets tomorrow for a check up and medication review. She's struggling with the heat at the moment so pleased its cooled down a little tonight! As you can tell, even though it has fooled down she's still having a difficult time. We will make sure she's had a very worthy fighting chance with whatever is going on!
Here are Milk (now Brienne) and Valerie (now Gilly) with their new fried Yara. They're settling in so well and quickly sorting out positions. Its lovely to hear things going nice and smoothly and that Yara is settled with both her new pals.
Introductions have started for Jenny into our long standing group. They're going well and she's already made a connection with Dinah our gorgeous vari mismarked splodge. We've also been preparing for the others to go and this is our goodie bag we like our girls to go with, including some bedding, food, soft food for the older lady they'll be staying with, some toys and treats, and it's not full yet!
Following the post of the returnees. Milk, Jenny and Valerie have been back with us for a good 6 weeks now. Jenny will be staying with us, she has been on many meds since her return and hasn't responded to them, so what we initially thought was an obstruction, but treat for a stubborn URI, is likely an obstruction from something internal. We will be keeping a very close eye on her, for the time being she is happy and healthy, but sadly won't know what it is without serious investigation, so for now, it's a waiting game to know what is going on.
The other two girls have been reserved all ready for a lone doe needing company. We think they'd be the perfect fit!
It's very hot and warm in the rat room this weekend. So we've been helping cool everyone down by freezing various textures and popping it in their cages to lie on. We've also played cheerio fishing and ice cube fishing, we froze water and blackberries in a pop bottle, smashed it up and added it in bowls in everyones cage, as well as too the fishing area.
We've had 3 of our girls return to the rescue. Sadly their owner went through some serious health issues and needed help. They are back with us, and going through some health issues themselves (their past owner had started their treatments), one has a very stubborn URI that is being treated (we've been through a few treatments so far). They're 3 gorgeous girls who may be back up for adoption after we've made sure their health is stable.
A little compilation video, with some of our rats getting up to all sorts in our rat room! Including Scully opening the treat tub, the clever girl!
Everyone loves a go at treat fishing! Nobody is as enthusiastic as our Harmony. If I did deeper, I bet she'd swim!
Meet Lmao (luh-mah-ow) and JK;
These two very pretty, very gorgeous spoldgey mismarked young things came into the rescue recently. They're quite nervous of being handled, so we will be beginning work with that soon. Other than that, these are 2 absolutely beautiful girls! They come for head strokes, and play games, and are very sweet. They'll be staying with us for atleast another few weeks, so we can get a good start on helping their confidence. They will need a confident handler, and would love a bigger group, though not entirely needed, it is preferred. Lmao is the one with extra splodges (possible vari mismarked) and JK (possible ba****ck mismarked, though without knowing genetics we will just call them splodgey mismarked babies), with the whiter back, JK is the one with the least confidence at the moment.
Hi! we've been very busy over here at Harmony Rat Rescue, we've had a whole lot of decorating to do, and the NERS rat show to prepare for, and head too!
we've had a couple of does brought in recently, so i'll post about them 2 in a moment.
We went to the Show on Saturday which was amazing, and our resident rescue Layla won 3rd in pets 18+ month does, which though there were only 3 entries, i'm still super proud of her! We also had some lovely wins from 2 of our 3 breeder babies, which was amazing! Vulpix came 1st in Dumbo challange, 1st in Dumbo AOV and 2nd Dumbo AA! and Pheonix 1st Essex and 1st marked! Calyx sadly couldn't make it due to suspected staph, which is healing very nicely.
We also passed on the lovely "Simon" to willow at HoneyPaws Rodent rescue, and he spent the day being brilliant in Lilly's top having lots of cuddles! He couldn't stay here as a lone male, as sadly at the moment we don't have an males to help him along with. It's important that as rescues we work together so the rats are getting exactly what they need!
Here are my girls and their winnings, and Calyx joining in.
I'll be posting about the new girls soon, so keep an eye out, they're scrummy!
It's spring already! so with that, some pictures! Harmony was tucked up in bed very asleep when we took these (as were most of them!), but we may get a few shots later! enjoy the sweetness!
We've had a lovely update from the home of Stevie, Tea, Ginny and Carrie (was Chattar, malteaser, Regina and Carrie). They are doing super and their personalities are shining through, they've all remembered dinner time means back to the cage time, so its good to know something I've passed on has stayed! They have an amazing home, and are doing so well!
Something to do and look at!

The girls have now been RESERVED! We are very excited for them and their new family.
Caramac, Chattar, Malteaser and Regina:
These girls are now ready to find their forever home. They are 4 very different from each other, but completely amazing girls. Carrie (Caramac) is a sweet people orientated girl, who is always close by if not on me, she's super petite but starting to get bigger by the day. Malteaser is a speedy girl who goes from investigating everything and whizzing past you, to climbing all over you the next. Chattar is more reserved but still very lovely, she does everything in her own time and on her own terms but is sweet about it. Regina i've fallen for the most, though she did come with a bite history (one surrounding protecting babies, so not her fault), she has shown nothing but curiosity and love, and has taken to free time like a master! 4 very amazing girls who deserve the best! They will be going together as a group of 4 and i won't break them up unless there's an exceptional reason to.
If you're interested, please send me a message, and remember all of our rats are subject to an application form being filled out. Then we will see how will they fit with you, and you them and go from there.
Sorry for the quiet on here, sadly over the weekend we lost Gary following his neuter. He was doing well but a suspect heart condition took his life, despite our best efforts to help him. Ryan is recovering very well, missing his pal, but he has a wonderful home with a lone girl to go to, they need each other very much and we are grateful to the home he has. Our thoughts go out to their home. I'm looking forward to them meeting each other next week. Hopefully in the next few days (I've had a few sleepless nights keeping an eye on Ryan, so we are all out of the normal for the moment), I will have an update on the lovely Caramac, Chattar, Malteaser and Regina.
Gary and Ryan:
They've had their surgeries and are recovering well. We will be going to get them in a few hours and have their hospital cage ready. I will keep everyone updated to their progress as we go. I am looking forward to having them back here and taking care of them.
Gary and Ryan... They have now been reserved till they finish healing after surgery this week.
Ryan and Gary update:
These boys, though doing super, will be going in for a castrate in 2 weeks time. It's a decision not taken lighhtly, however since being around other girls for a long period, one boy has taken to bullying and overly surpressing the other. It isn't fair on them both to feel like this, and since they've had no enquiries, it's time to settle their hormones. I've taken the decision to neuter BOTH boys. They are both very healthy, and though currently only one has the surge of hormones, it is possible the other, once not surpressed will have them too.
I'm hoping this may help long term, meaning the boys can join girls after a suitable time has passed, and we know they are sterile.
As always, please feel free to contact for an application form if you are interested in any of the rats here, at Harmony Rat Rescue.
The lovely Harmony cuddled up and bruxing tonight (one of my own personal rescues). She's really started to slow down these last few days, which is worrying, looks and feels fine, no obvious issues, urine checked etc... Just old age catching up I think. Such a gorgeous loving girl
Little Caramac (or Carrie as we call her here) is such a loving, human orientated girl... She also adores our rat tree and has taken to hiding her favourite treats in the top.
Caramac, Chattar, Malteaser and Regina
I'm currently doing introductions with my big gang, with these 4 and what a joy to do! I'm lucky my group is really easy too, and they've slot in lovely. They are much more comfortable in a large group and they love it. I've caught them bruxing randomly in a pile, its lovely to see.
Remember to ask for an application form if you're interested in any rats from us, even if that's later on.
Caramac, Chattar, Malteaser and Regina:
UPDATE:
These girls are absolutely gorgeous! They are very easy going, and LOVE free play. They are thoroughly enjoying the rat room now they've finished quarantine. The babies are very small still and i'm wanting them to fill out a little before going to a home, mum Regina is very petite herself, however i would definitely prefer a bit more weight there. Chattar is a lovely berkie, and i adore her. She checks in a lot during free play, and climbs up my chest to my shoulder often. Regina and Malteaser are quite alike in temperament as well as looks, though malteaser a little more people orientated than mum, they both whizz around the room together. Little Caramac is just adorable! She loves cuddles and will seek people out over rats whilst out. I'm looking forward to seeing these girls settled. They are varied in temperament, but they are all so lovely!
Please ask for an application form if you're wanting to look into any of our rats, and we will also answer any questions you may have.
Excuse some of the focussing in the pictures... sometimes i'm just not quick enough
