Remembering all those who sacrificed so much.
“The eyes of the world are upon you” was General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s D Day message to paratroopers at RAF Greenham Common on 5th June 1944. Tomorrow we remember the sacrifices made by the armed forces during the D Day operations

This week is Myopia Awareness Week.
A week to highlight to bring awareness to the significant problem of myopia, the danger of which is often underestimated.
Myopia is shortsightedness or nearsightedness. Myopia happens when the eyeball itself is elongated, or because the shape of the cornea (the clear window in the front of the eye) or the lens (a disc-shaped object inside the eye) isn't quite right.
This lengthening causes the need for glasses and also can stretch and thin the retina (back of the eye) over time. Thinner retinas are at risk of sight threatening conditions like Retinal Detachment or Myopic Macular Degeneration.
We can slow down myopia in kids now with special glasses and contacts - protecting their eyes and reducing the chance of conditions like Retinal Detachments with age.
If you are worried about myopia in your child, give us a ring in 01635 528844.
Varifocals and reading glasses make not be the best for everything. Listen to hear all about what occupational or task specific lenses are and can do for you.
Not just for computer use, but task specific lenses are also great for crafts, sewing and wearing around the kitchen.
We had such great fun with local talented videographer Woke Media.

We are putting up some new videos on our website and also on YouTube but watch for some clips on social media soon. Our current videos were made during the pandemic - 😷. So we needed some updating and to show more of what we now offer.
Special congratulations to Gina, our dispensing optician, on her selection in the this past weekend's Black and White Photographer of the Year exhibition in London.
A photograph by Gina Robinson, a member of Newbury PhotographyClub , was chosen to be exhibited in the Black and White Photographer of the Year exhibition at the The Coningsby Gallery in London, a prestigious venue that showcases the work of exceptional artists. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that only 40 images were shortlisted from over 40,000 entries worldwide, which underscores the exceptional quality of Gina's work.
The photograph, Gazing into the Face of Extinction, is of the endangered African White Backed Vulture. Gina says “I hope through my photography, I can bring the attention to the plight of these magnificent birds, some of the most endangered in the world, with populations declining rapidly. As well as habitat loss, they are deliberately being poisoned by poachers as they give away the location of their illegal activities.”

Are you noticing any changes in your vision and finding it a little blurry out there?
Unfortunately it’s a common sign that your eyes might be going through some changes, especially as we hit our 40’s…
Our eyes tend to undergo some natural shifts, called presbyopia, which becomes noticeable in middle age, where it becomes trickier to focus on close-up objects. That’s why things might seem a tad blurry when you’re reading your favorite book or scrolling through your phone. You might prefer to ignore it, because nobody really wants to wear glasses, however, there are solutions out there for you. It all starts with an eye test… then we can look at sharpening up your view with either glasses or contacts! 🤓👀
Share this or tag anyone you know who’s showing signs of blurred vision!
Would you like some Dry Eye relief?
We have the latest technology to give long term help for dry eyes…Intense Pulse Light (IPL)
A 2021 study showed IPL is more effective in the treatment of eyelid gland dysfunction dry eye than a traditional eyelid gland massage combined with a hot compress.
IPL safely and effectively improves eye function and alleviates clinical symptoms of dry eyes. It can also help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Sound like a win-win to me!
We are delighted to be one of the few optometrists in the area to have this technology. If you’d like to talk to us to find out of this would be suitable for you call us on 01635 528844.
What you see in this picture is not just any frame.
It’s a frame that has been altered to fit a patient who has never found frames with sides long enough. We sent this frame off to have the sides (temples) lengthened.
And the result was a perfect fit - finally- for a patient who’d lived for many years with frames that were too small.
It’s little services like this that we may not be shouting from the rooftops. But it’s one of the many little things we are doing as an independent opticians to make a difference in the lives of our patients.
Easter Egg Raffle draw…and congrats to Janienne!!

What is Blepharitis?
The white debris in the lashes is called blepharitis. Blepharitis is one of the most common eye conditions, but can be easily managed to prevent further discomfort.
It sounds like a scary infection or disease to some people and we get lots of questions such as whether it needs addressing or if it’s something serious that it will cause vision loss.
Hopefully these slides will help you better understand and treat the condition but if you have any questions, please ask below ⬇️
Alternatively, if you would like to book an appointment with us please do get in touch.
Stop in and get your raffle tickets to win this yummy and beautiful Easter Egg!
The Lions Club of Newbury Easter 2024 Raffle tickets are £1 each and the money raised goes to help those in need in our area.
Stop in Wednesday and Thursday this week to get your tickets.

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week
Many who are neurodivergent - those who have conditions of autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette’s and more - may suffer from visual stress which can cause slower reading rates and poor reading comprehension.
Colour overlay assessments are one of the specialty tests we do here at Valarie Jerome Optometrists.
Colour overlays can help for those who suffer from visual stress - kids and adults can use these. The use of an overlay can improve the reading speed and comprehension- less lines skipped and less lines having to be re-read.
With every overlay assessment, our optometrist also does a binocular vision assessment. This shows how the eyes are working - or not working- as a team. Reading glasses combined with an overlay may be needed for some kids and adults.
If you’d like to book in for an overlay assessment, give us a ring on 01635 528844 or book in online at www.drvalariejerome.com.
Think the air puff test is bad? Check out the old way eye pressures used to be checked - 😬!
Last week was World Glaucoma Week. A bit late, but wanted to let all our followers know that a routine eye test can catch glaucoma early. Your eye care provider can get you treatment early and prevent vision loss.
You can have high eye pressures and not even know if - no symptoms, no vision problems. The danger is that if this pressure is allowed to stay high, it can potentially lead to vision loss. Loss that surgery and eye drops can’t get back.
Your optometrist will check your eye pressures at every routine exam. Not this way in the picture, thankfully.
Hopefully you won’t need to, but if you experience any of these eye symptoms you should call us to discuss whether you need an emergency appointment with our team. 👀
🚨 Don’t ignore these:
- pain in your eyes
- redness
- sudden changes in vision
- flashing lights
- sudden black floaters
- sudden double vision
- curtain that’s come up over vision
- chemicals splashed in eye
We offer emergency appointments during working hours but if you cannot get hold of us you should call 111.
We’re here for your eye health, not just for pretty specs!
It's the last few work days before many of us take off time for Christmas and New Year. Who is ready for a break from the computer screen?
Many of us are using a screen all work day long and likely to suffer with Computer Vision Syndrome. Taking a break from the screen will help over the holidays.
Read here to find out more on how you can help your eyes when on the screen all day long. Check out our other Helpful Articles on our website.
Understanding Computer Vision Syndrome Just a few decades ago, computer vision syndrome (CVS) was not known or understood. However, with an increase in the role of computers in our lives, it has become an increasingly common issue. Researchers believe that 50-90% of people who use computers in their daily lives have experienced CVS to so...
