A Donor Dad's Perspective

I think about Isabel many times, every single day.

Every day when I glance at her photo I'll say "Hi baby" in my head. The teddy with a recording of her heart beat sits on my bedside table

The pain of her loss has never eased, never faded and nor do I want it to. I see it as a reminder.

It hurts just as much today as it did the moment we lost her.

The moment we agreed to Organ Donation.

I make no secret of the fact I initially said no, overcome with grief, every cell in my body, every emotion....protective.

I didn't want anyone to touch her.

But Cheryl changed that. A conversation she had earlier in life about organ donation after reading a magazine article came to the fore and helped us process that moment.

And although the pain of her loss has not and will never fade, it is not on its own.

It could have been. I could have been left carrying grief on its own.

Picture, if you will, the grief as a person walking along a path.

There walking side by side is another person....this person is hope. Hope that lives were saved by our agreement to donate. Hope that somewhere out there other children are alive because of that choice.

And the two walk step by step, side by side, chatting and keeping each other company. Sometimes one speaks louder than the other, sometimes they are quiet.

But neither is alone.

And for that I am glad.

It's a wild windy day up in the Highlands today, with her hair blowing all over and the sand between her toes Bea has been down the beach making sand castles.

She's able to experience this and everything else in her life because of a selfless decision a family made.

A decision made at the worst possible moment of their lives.

In the midst of losing their child, in a moment of hopelessness for them...they gave hope to Bea, to us as her family and to several other families as well.

Take a moment to think what that must be like.

How selfless a decision that is.

It is without doubt that decision saved Bea from certain death.

Not a day goes by without us thinking of them.

Every second her heart beats, every breath she takes is owed to the moment in time that they said yes.

The gift of life is a truly wonderful thing.

But it is also a gift of love.

To save others from the same loss you are experiencing, to give hope, to allow others to survive, it is the most incredible act of courage, of life, of love.

The heart that beats inside Bea is truly the heart of heroes ❤️

Finally got to meet this lush little girl. Layla and her family are just the loveliest youd ever meet. They've played and danced all day its been lush. As parenrs we never take the good days for granted but you'd never think on a day like to do that they'd ever been through anything. Previous memories made with the two sassy heart princesses

Such an amazing day at Adventure Valley, Durham family festival. Amazing entertainment from Bee Enchanted CIC Joe Banana Children's Entertainer and workshops with Frank Styles

We have had the best time. Thank you Red Sky Foundation for arranging tickets for lots of heart families.

We loved it and bea didn't stop dancing!

A little celebration!

12 months ago we started beas 500 crew.

This fb group is made up of a bunch of people who all pay £1 a week to be a member.

The money is pooled together and each we get to send it to someone in the north east that we think needs it. The money has helped in so many ways from families in hosptial, to someone who had a house fire and a lovely dad setting up a home for his little one.

I am so proud that during our first year we have helped you people and given away over £12k!
