Members of our Alan Shearer Activity Centre have enjoyed another visit by Carol Bowden whose music and sensory sessions are always a massive hit.
Supported by our friendly Recreation Assistants, members of all ages and abilities - and their families - loved trying out the mini guitars, xylophones and tambourines or simply enjoyed playful moments with coloured ribbons and scarves.
“Carol’s sessions are always so popular,” said Senior Recreation Assistant, Heather, “and being outside this time made them even more fun. We can’t wait for her to come back again.”
Our Alan Shearer Activity Centre is holding a host of different events and activities for members during the summer holidays. You can find more information on our Alan Shearer Centre home page, on our page or just ring our lovely Recreation Assistants for more information on 0191 2678118.
Giant Bear Finds a Forever Home! 🐻🏠
This cuddly friend has found his forever home at our Alan Shearer Centre, thanks to the incredible generosity of a local youngster. Oscar won the giant bear at a school raffle but knew he'd be happier spreading joy at the Alan Shearer Centre. We're so touched by Oscar's kindness and can’t wait for our next Teddy Bear’s Picnic!
Jackie Dunn, Centre manager asked Oscar what the teddy was called, “Alan of course!” laughed Oscar.
The next time you visit the centre don’t forget to say hello to Alan!

Our Story
Welcome to the Alan Shearer Centre page. The site is designed for users of our Centre as an interactive space where you can share information, ask questions, post pictures, provide feedback and keep up with our news.
The Alan Shearer Centre comprises two distinct facilities within the same building:
• The Alan Shearer Activity Centre
• The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre
The Centre has its own dedicated fundraising arm:
• The Alan Shearer Foundation
Launched in May 2012, the funds raised through the Foundation go directly to support these two facilities to provide additional benefits for existing users.
The Alan Shearer Activity Centre
The specialist Activity Centre, funded entirely by the Foundation, is completely free of charge to use and is open weekly, Monday to Saturday. It offers access to an array of sensory, fun, and social facilities and activities for disabled people of all ages. We have a hydrotherapy suite, sensory rooms, an interactive sensory cave, a giant ball pool, and an on-site café. All sensory areas, including the hydrotherapy suite, are equipped with tracking hoists for those with mobility difficulties. We also run events most weeks, such as arts and crafts, which are also free to all members.
The Activity Centre also has beautifully landscaped gardens which are wheelchair accessable. On the grounds, we have a lovely sensory garden, with gorgious flowers and trees. There is also our park, which includes swings, a climbing structure and a roundabout. The park also has wheelchair accessible features, such as a place for a wheelchair to fit on the roundabout and a wheelchair swing. Finally, we also have our woodland walk with a newly fitted hideaway to chill in.
For adults, we also have our live and learn sessions that run throughout the week on Tuesdays and Thursdsay. On tuesday we run arts and crafts from 11am-1pm and thursday we run cookery sessions from 12pm-2pm. These session are free, but are limited so you would need to book ahead.
The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre
The Short Break Centre is a registered facility and provides professional respite breaks for people with complex disabilities and challenging behaviour, including people on the autistic spectrum and with Asperger’s Syndrome. The Centre provides parents and carers with a well-earned rest and peace of mind.
The Alan Shearer Centre has full access to the Activity Centre and is the only short break centre in the north east with access to such a wide range of specialist facilities within several acres of grounds. Existing users also benefit from additional free respite breaks, funded by the Foundation.
Ring our reception staff to arrange a visit or to find out more information about the Alan Shearer Centre.
