This giant foot, carved out of porphyry, is from the 2nd century AD Roman Egypt. We don't know why it was made, but it might have been a gift to a healing god or all that survives of a colossal statue standing about 6 metres high. Find it on display in the Ancient Egypt Gallery on the first floor.
(ad) If you're looking for something free, indoors (and not Halloweeny) to try this week, how about the Totally Chaotic History Museum Trail at Great North Museum: Hancock ?
Just drop in during museum opening hours from 19 October - 2 November.
It's FREE - simply collect from the welcome desk.
Complete the activity sheet by discovering Roman objects around the museum, give yourself a Roman name and design your very own Roman outfit. Complete the activity and receive a Totally Chaotic History Sticker as a well done.

This huge, rare Japanese spider crab is one of our oldest residents. Back in 1877, when John Hancock was trying to raise money for a new museum in Newcastle, his friend Captain Henry Craven St John sent him this amazing creature from the Far East. It arrived in many pieces inside a large crate and had to be carefully reassembled like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle! Find it on display in the Living Planet Gallery.
