We are aware of comments circulating online relating to incidents at Lysaght Institute, Newport, on Sunday 9th June 2024.

Lysaght Institute is committed to being a safe and inclusive venue for all. The wellbeing of our customers, employees, contractors and neighbours have always been our first priority.

Since reopening in 2012, Lysaght has specialised, and taken pride, in successfully hosting weddings from many different cultures.

Regrettably, on Sunday evening, following a dynamic risk assessment, we had to make the decision to close our doors early and end the wedding we were hosting two hours ahead of schedule. This was following a number of incidents where guests behaviour was putting the safety of fellow guests, staff working at the venue, and the building itself at risk.

It was the last thing we wanted to have to do, but after repeated warnings the situation was deteriorating and the lack of co-operation from guests meant it was impossible for us to continue hosting the event safely.

While we understand and appreciate the disappointment this caused, we were left with no other option. Following the early end to the event our security team were able to clear the building and car park area safely with the support of Gwent Police.

We are conducting a full review of our operation and will be discussing the issues with the family, and look forward to hearing any concerns they have about the evening.

We would like to reiterate our commitment to being a safe and inclusive venue for all, with the wellbeing of our customers, employees, contractors and neighbours at the heart of everything we do.
