"What is this feeling trying to tell me?" is a much more effective way of relating to difficult emotions than trying to fight them, push them away, or paint over them.
That's because there are no "bad" feelings. Sure, some are easier and more comfortable than others, but they are all messengers and they are all important.
Just like our nerve endings let us know when something is too sharp, hot, cold, and so on, our uncomfortable, difficult, and challenging feelings can let us know when our boundaries have been crossed, when we need to rest and recover, when we have unmet needs, what is important to us and all sorts of other important information about ourselves and the world around us.
If we can learn to reframe feelings as our emotional nerve endings, then maybe the next time they let us know something is awry we could try thanking them instead of wishing them away!
