Patients who turn 75, those aged 75 to 79, and pregnant women will be eligible for a free vaccine to protect them from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). ๐๐
RSV is an infectious disease that affects the airways and lungs. It often causes symptoms similar to a cold, including:
- Cough ๐คง
- Sore throat ๐
- Sneezing ๐คง
- A runny or blocked nose ๐คง
- Some people, particularly in higher-risk groups, may require hospital admission ๐ฅ
A single dose of the vaccine will help boost protection as you reach an age group or condition at higher risk of serious RSV infection. Unlike the flu vaccine, the RSV vaccine does not need to be taken every year. ๐
We will also be inviting patients aged 79-80 for their vaccine where required. Your GP surgery will contact you to offer an appointment.
Please note, that this is separate from the Flu and COVID vaccinations weโll be offering in October. Itโs recommended that the RSV vaccine is not received within 2 weeks before or after the Flu or COVID vaccinations. ๐ซ๐
๐โจ Heading to university? Donโt forget to get your vaccines! ๐
Before you start your higher education journey, make sure youโre up to date with your MenACWY and MMR vaccinations. These are crucial for protecting yourself and others against serious diseases.
๐น MenACWY Vaccine: Protects against meningitis and septicaemia, which can spread quickly in close living conditions like university halls.
๐น MMR Vaccine: Safeguards against measles, mumps, and rubella, which are still prevalent and can be highly contagious.
For more details on how to get these vaccines and why theyโre so important, check out the UCAS guide here: https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate/clearing-and-results-day/after-results-day/getting-ready-higher-education/vaccines-students

NEW RSV vaccination available from 1st September 2024:
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cause of coughs and colds. It usually gets better by itself, but it can be serious for some babies and older adult.
Who eligible?
- All women who are at least 28 weeks pregnant (the eligible cohort) on 1 September 2024, will be offered a single dose of the
RSV vaccine. After that, pregnant women will become eligible as they reach 28 weeks gestation and remain eligible up to birth (generally this will be given by the Community School Aged Immunisation Service (CSAIS)or midwives but can be given at Acle).
- All adults turning 75 years old on or after 1 September 2024 will be eligible for the routine programme and should be offered a single dose of the RSV vaccine on or after their 75th birthday. A one-off catch-up campaign for those already aged 75 to 79 years (this is given at Acle surgery).
Is your child up to date with their vaccinations? Check their Red Book or contact your GP surgery to find out and book any missed doses. ๐ฑ๐
More info: nhs.uk/childhoodvaccinations
Why are vaccines important?
Vaccines protect children from serious diseases such as measles, mumps, and polio. They are safe and effective, helping to build immunity and prevent the spread of infections within the community. Vaccination not only protects your child but also helps safeguard public health by achieving herd immunity. Ensure your child gets all recommended doses on time for the best protection.
