🚢 Ship speeds are measured in knots but do you know where this originated from?

One knot equals one nautical mile per hour and the term ”knots” comes from the 17th century when sailors measured the speed of their ship by using a “common log,” a rope tied with equally spaced knots.

The common log would trail behind the boat for a specific amount of time before the sailors would count how many knots had passed. This estimated their speed, so it literally measured the knots. 🪢

Well, this is a bit of a belated post but, YES I AM...... Doing the 10 mile mud run, fundraising for the Air Ambulance. Fortunately, (as I have done no training), the helicopter will be on standby 🤣🙏😮 At least I hope I am joking.

Know your knots.... The anchor hitch, also known as Fisherman's Hitch or Fisherman's Bend is commonly used to tie boats to docks. It's easy to tie and doesn't reduce the rope's breaking strength by much, and also very secure hence why well-suited where safety is a concern.
