Drumstick Leaves & Agathi Leaves
Throughout Nusantara Majapahit Edible Green leaves are consumed almost daily and appreciated for their rich mineral content and other health properties.
They may appear cooked in a Coconut Milk based 'Masak Lemak' or 'Ginitaang', stirfried with grated coconut or scrambled eggs, as well as flavouring Omlettes, Dosas and fritters, Or just boiled and dipped in Sambal.
Drumstick Leaves which come from the same tree as the more familiar Drumstick Pods have more iron than Beef Steak weight for weight and are rich in Calcium.
The slightly bitter-sweet Agathi has an agreeable chewy texture and pairs well with lentil stews.
Other common green leaves include Pennywort, Ponnangani, Amaranth in all stages of maturity, Kangkung, Ceylon Spinach, Saluyot and Sweet Potato Leaves.
Next time you are at your South East Asian Grocers why not be adventurous and try some?
Theres plenty of online cooking resources nowadays so you need not worry if its you're first time preparing them!

Putli Mandi/Onde Onde/Klepon ขนม ต้ม
Glutinous Rice flour balls with a sweetened coconut or palm sugar filling are common from Siam all the way through Nusantara Majapahit to the Pilipinas.
This is a Tausug version from.the Southern Phillipines which utilizes the much loved Purple Ube flavour and colour unstead of the more common green Pandan.
The Bahasa Sug name 'Putli Mandi' would easily be understood by all Bahasa Nusantara speakers as none other than Puterii Mandi- Princesses in a Shower - however in Malaya this would more commonly denote the balls immersed in Santan or a syrup rather than dry coconut.
Klepon is a more common name used in Java and surrounding Islands although this too has many variations.
We will be selling this much loved 'Bang Bang' on Wednesday 10th June at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Farmers Market from 9.30am until sold out - you know the score, get there early for your Nusantarian Food Fix before we sell out!
Expect lots of special items also- watch this space for updates!

Tausug Pastil
Pastil is the Mindanao equivalent of Tocilog/Tapsilog, a popular Filipino Breakfast Combo of Fried Rice with a Tocino or Tapa (Pinoy Style cured meat) topping, Fried Egg and maybe sliced tomatoes or raw onions.
Pastil on the other hand uses finely shredded chicken, beef or fish cooked until very dry with abodo seasonings such as garlic, dark soy sauce, vinegar and pepper. Chilli is usually added in this region. A Boiled Egg suffices over a fried one and it is often wrapped in a banana leaf similar to a Nasi Lemak Biasa. Versions using yellow 'Java Rice' and a Rendang topping can also be found in the Muslim area of Manila, showing strong Indonesian roots to this dish.

Another sell-out success for Pinoy Pantry at the QE Hospital.
A huge selection of Nusantarian Desserts along with Filipino Hot Classics such as Caldereta Kambing, Bicol Express, Beef Menudo and Chicken Pochero were on offer, and a wide range of customers got to experience a taste of Paradise.

27/01/2024

Ube Ketayap
Ketayap, Kuih Dadar, Daral, these are some of the various names this popular dessert is known as accross Nusantara Majapahit.
Often coloured with Pandan extract, Ube is poular is the Philippines whilst turmeric tinged versions are common in Sri Lanka, flavoured with a pinch of cardamom instead of pandan leaves. Inside is fresky grated coconut cooked with local palm sugar.

18/01/2024

Caldereta Kambing

Much to everyone's dismay, our second market appearance of 2024 was also cancelled due to high wind warnings.
A hearty Mutton Caldereta was prepared to warm up all the Harborne punters meaty chop bones and 'velveted' leg meat combined with cartots, potatoes and bell peppers in our signature tomato-peanut sauce.
