⚪️White Watch had a rescue mission on last night, when Daisy the cat had managed to get herself stuck behind a gas fireplace after squeezing through the smallest of gaps. Thankfully, with lots of careful cutting and removing of parts, we were able to successfully get her free and back with her owner. Our very own Dr Dolittle animal lover, FF Sullivan-Webb, didn't want to miss the chance for a picture and cuddle with our satisfied customer. 🐱🚒 ⚪️

Last night, we were called to an incident in Kersington Crescent, Oxford. Unfortunately, due to the way the cars had been parked along the road, we were unable to get the fire engine to the address, as there wasn't enough space left for a car to get through let alone a lorry. Whilst we are fully aware of the challenges of parking around the City, please consider if a fire engine can get through the space you leave. Thankfully, the incident was resolved quickly, and everybody involved was safe, but had we needed to act quickly, we would not have been able to, due to the distance away that we had to stop. Simple things like ensuring your front wheels are straight can make all the difference in leaving enough room for the emergency services. Thank you.

A statement from Rob MacDougall, our Chief Fire Officer:

"We are devastated to share we were informed yesterday that Jon Wright, Firefighter at Didcot Fire Station, has sadly passed away at his home.

Our thoughts are with Jon’s family, his friends and his colleagues.

During this very difficult time, we ask everyone to give Jon’s family, friends and colleagues space and time as we grieve and support one another. Thank you."

⚪️White Watch Slade⚪️ are delighted to have welcomed 2 new Firefighters to the Watch this past month, and they have settled in great already. We have been putting them through their paces in various different scenarios, and after a busy month have seen a number of varied incidents too. We even got George helping out as everyone's favourite Dragon, Drago at the recent Open Doors at Rewley Road Fire station . Welcome to the Watch FF Imogen Hall and FF George Fazey. We are sure you will see us around the local community in the coming weeks and months so please feel free to come say hello or ask any questions you may have.

We train for all types of incidents and as you can see from the pictures these include things such as, fire's 🔥 where we need breathing apparatus to enter the building, rescues from height using our big ladders 🪜, to the potential for burst water mains or hydrants out of control.

Well done to the crews from Slade Park Fire Station who attended this scenario. Great effort by all!

11/07/2023

At 3:30 this afternoon 2 Fire engines from Slade Park Fire Station and one from Rewley Road Fire Station were called to multiple reports of a fire in the John Allen centre, Temple Cowley, Oxford.

On arrival crews were faced with a developing fire, at the rear of a retail store. 2 Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the fire using our hose reel jets.

With the fire extinguished, crews now faced a large amount of smoke, which posed a danger to the animals trapped inside the store.

With additional crews arriving, positive pressure fans were used to clear the smoke and provide vital air to the animals while multiple breathing apparatus wearers were sent in, transfering the animals into potable cages, before bringing them to the staff outside.

Incident Commander, Crew Manager, Henri Ind, said “The staff had done an excellent job evacuating the store and rescuing as many animals as they could safely. This allowed us to focus on extinguishing the fire and stopping it from spreading to neighbouring properties. We evacuated the surrounding retail units as a precaution as the smoke travel between these were extensive.”

Crew Manager Ind continued “We're also pleased to say that all the animals were safely rescued and, after a stressful few hours, are now back in their homes, being cared for by the staff”

On Tuesday evenings, on-call stations across the county hold their weekly drill nights. This is a designated 2-hour training session that all on-call firefighters attend as part of their roles.

Slade Park Fire Station’s on call crew trained alongside wholetime colleagues in a multiple car Road Traffic Collision (RTC) this drill night. The crews were faced with a complex but realistic scenario involving “live casualties” – played by members of red watch, who were trapped in the vehicles.

Using a variety of rescue tools and space creation techniques, crews were tasked with securing the vehicles, freeing the casualties’ entrapments, and then extricating them in a controlled manner to prevent further injury. The photos below show how the scenario developed, and some of the methods that we can utilise in RTCs.

Firefighters’ Memorial Day (St Florian’s Day)

Today we join Fire and Rescue Services all over the world to take time to recognise Firefighters' Memorial Day, for both serving and retired firefighters.

The day honours the sacrifice of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty, acknowledging the courage and dedication of generations of firefighters, including those who serve our communities today.

Oxfordshire Sub-Officer John Wixey from Charlbury Station died on 18th March 1987 in the line of duty. Today we will remember him and all the brave firefighters who sadly lost their lives.

The image is the National Firefighters Memorial located to the south of St Paul’s Cathedral and is composed of three bronze statues depicting firefighters in action at the height of the Blitz.
