During their office summer clear-up, the Development Team found some art from the past!

These three cards were created and were sold in 1979 in aid of the centenary appeal. The College also sold tea-towels and pendants for the centenary, but we had not seen these cards for a long time.

L-R: (A) St Anne and the Virgin Mary, (B) Symbols of the British Isles, and (C) the St Anne’s Beaver.

(A) The first card shows a drawing of a monumental brass from St Mary’s Church in Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, made in c.1400. It is of St Anne, and her daughter, the Virgin Mary, whom she instructs in reading.

(B) The drawing on this card shows a leek (Wales), thistle (Scotland), rose (England) and shamrock (Ireland), symbols of the British Isles. They were carved by 82-year old Edward Belcher, a local stone mason, to commemorate the opening of the St Anne’s Dining Hall in 1960 by HM Queen Elizabeth II. The stone carving is now built into a wall in the Michelle Clayman Roof Garden. See if you can spot it next time you visit College!

(C) This last card shows a representation of the beaver carving on Hartland House, which is above the students' pidge room today.

The cards will now be part of the St Anne’s archive. We believe that they may have been designed by beloved St Anne’s tutor, the late Dr Hazel Rossotti, whose artistic talents can also be seen around College, most prominently in her stain glass windows on Hartland House. However, if anyone has any more information about the cards, we would love to hear about it!

Congratulations to everyone receiving their A-Level results today -- you've worked so hard! Let us know if you're and will see us at St Anne's in October!

Today we had a wonderful visit from the Merze Tate Explorers, who came all the way from Michigan, USA!

The group visited us to hear more about Dr Merze Tate (matric. 1932), a St Anne's alumna, whom the Merze Tate Explorers take their name from. Dr Tate was the first African-American woman to study at Oxford and the first African-American to be awarded a B.Litt by the University, and was a member of the Society of Oxford Home Students (now St Anne's). You can read more about Dr Tate's life and important legacy on our online archive: https://buff.ly/400RvIN

We listened to a brilliant talk from Alice, our Library Assistant, and Matthew, our archivist, who told the Explorers about Dr Tate's time at Oxford and about life for female students at the University of Oxford in the late 19th- and early 20th-century.

The Explorers also got to look at our archive material on Dr Tate, including letters and telegrams from Merze herself, as well as her student file.

The Library were also gifted a copy of Small Beginnings: The Photographic Journey Through the Life of Merze Tate. The book was authored by the organisation's founder and leader, Sonya Hollins, and our copy was kindly signed by Sonya and the Explorers who visited today.

It was lovely to see such enthusiasm for a very important alumna! We hope the Explorers enjoy the rest of their UK visit.

Former rowers -- do you remember any wonderful lock trips?

SABC recently embarked on their first lock trip for some time, due to flooding on the river making it unsafe. Molly Wilson explains:

"We row on the Isis, which is the stretch of the River Thames between Iffley lock to the South and Osney lock to the North. It's a short stretch, with no more than 1.9k that's consistently rowable. Therefore, when we want to build endurance and row for a longer stretch, we have to row through one of the locks in order to go further without having to constantly stop, spin round, and go back the way we came. This means it takes significantly longer, and the boat has to be accompanied by a launch (a small powerboat), as it isn't possible to cycle alongside the whole time and someone has to be able to operate the sluice gates at the lock. As a result, a lock trip can often prove a bit of an exciting adventure and give rowers the chance for a change of scenery. However, it's also a bit of an administrative nightmare to find enough available and keen people (as it takes most of the day), a launch driver and a coach (if you want to have a productive session). The river also has to be at a level low enough that it's safe to enter and leave the lock, and row when fatigued. As such, there haven't been any lock trips run by SABC this year, and I don't believe there were any last year either. This was therefore quite an exciting trip!"

We're looking forward to welcoming Plumer Society members and their guests into college for lunch and a talk with St Anne's Fellow, Professor Stuart Robinson, tomorrow. These events are an excellent opportunity to thank those who have let us know they plan to leave legacies to St Anne's. We are always keen to celebrate this kind of giving, which makes an enormous difference to our students.

The Plumer Society is named after former St Anne's Principal Eleanor Plumer, who managed our transition from The Society of Oxford Home Students to St Anne's College. The Plumer family shield is now our coat of arms.

If you have plans to leave us a legacy but haven't yet told us, we would love to hear from you! A reminder too that St Anne's alumnae have access to a free will-writing service from Octopus Legacy (whether you are planning to leave anything to College or not -- it doesn't matter!). You can read more about that on our Alumnae Benefits page: https://www.st-annes.ox.ac.uk/alumnae/alumnae-benefits/
